Hl2 Display Issues

hey dudes.

today i got my new radeon 9800 pro (256mg) and slapped that into my compy. once i had the drivers all installed i fired up halflife 2 and started to run around. unfortunately i've started to notice the this checkerboard in metallic, and liquid reflections. doesn't look like the missing tex one to me, i dunno. any of u guys know how to fix this one?

pentium 4 2.66 ghz
766MB ram
Direct X 9.0c

    it sounds like you have a missing texture (yeah, i know this really helps)
    is your HL2 retail or steam?

    I had this issue w/ HL2DM, changing resolutions and then changing back fixed it.

    yea I got that purplish blotchy purple boxes too, i got it when someone Imed me out of CS;S and I went back in. I also noticed in "dark maps" wood seems to light up and stand out <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I ahve a radeon 9600xt and supplosidly a friend of mine claimed my comp is just holding that card back (my comp is a sony viao, bought it back in 2000

    It doesn't look like a missing texture, since the pattern moves over several textures (grate, vent wall).

    It's a missing shader is what it is... The missing texture texture, as a shader. :P

    Here is what mine did (it was the cubemap):

    I had the purple floor effects as well in Counterstrike. I just restarted Steam and all was well.

    mine did something sorta like that where it turned stuff pink. i really dont know how i got rid of it though.

    The sad thing is, I get more help @ the steam forums than the NS forums. For hardware related problems anyways.

    I've always been able to fix this problem by restarting steam...

    But do what I always do, updates your drivers! (mobo chipset/video card)

    delete the shader gcf and redownload it?

    That's what I did when hl2 initially came out and weird stuff happened.

    its a problem with the specular (tested by using the "mat_specular 0" command. now i just need to figure out how to fix it(Isamil gets a cookie)

    Here is a big question. Are you using the latest catalyst dispaly drivers from ATI?

    I had this issue or something similar and the most recent drivers fixed it.

    What was your old video card?

    If it's nVidia, though it's worth a shot if it was ATI, do this:
    1) Install <a href='http://www.drivercleaner.net/' target='_blank'>Driver Cleaner</a>.
    2) Uninstall Control Panel/Control Center
    3) Uninstall drivers
    4) Restart in safe mode (F8 at bootup. If it asks you for a boot device, just choose your hard drive and keep tapping F8)
    5) Run Driver Cleaner.
    6) Run the filter on all ATI and nVidia entries. (Run it once with all of the ATI options selected, then again with all of the nVidia ones.)
    7) Restart computer.
    8) Reinstall ATI drivers.
