Its funny: In the demo, you can see the mass potential this thing has. But the demo level sucks so badly, it ends up turning you off!

First off: 3 men and a tank as my ENTIRE force? The tank requires all 3 men to use? Wait, so that means my entire force is a tank? Wow. Wait a second, there are troops all around here- what, I can't command them? But their colonel is worthless, I could command us and take over the town! Wait...what do you mean the tank has *no* fuel, whatsoever? Oh fine, I'll make a standing defense. Okay, now that all the germans are dead, I'll take that truck-Wait, let me get back out because its a little too uncomfortable in there. Okay, back in- oh crud, tank shell! Where'd that thing come from? It what? IT SPAWNED OUT OF THE AIR?! Great, now we have no way of saving the colonel!

AKA, the entire demo was a practice in pointless frustration. I like tactics, I really do- but you don't give me a 90% crippled fighting force and tell me to win takes tactcs. Anyone would call you *stupid* to call that tactics. Comon, with an engine that good, the level could've been 10x better.

QUOTE (Quaunaut @ Feb 6 2005, 12:21 AM)

Oh look, more complaining:

Why is it that whenever I try to take control of my average soldiers, it *refuses* to let me just use his....ONLY WEAPON? Why does it *default* to his grenade? What idiot thought that was a good idea? Makes it nigh on impossible when it comes to grabbing that car.

You got your sound problem fixed I presume? ^^

The demo level is an exellent level to start with. I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle! You start off with an undermaned fighting force with high hopes to find fuel and ammo in the nearby allied outpost, only to find that they are in a desperate situation to make ends meet. You're that one linking piece to do just that. It seems nigh impossible, but you have at least got to give it your all! So, with a severely understaffed defense, you prepare for the impact..

In the beginning, the demo shows off how you can use tactics to fend off a hoard of enemies with only a few men by being in close touch with each squad member, and how the depth of the game assists you in that aspect, as well as showing off the astoundingly fun direct control, not to mention the physics as the bullets are flying everywhere and the debree becomes one with the scenery in a beautiful transition of colors.

Secondly, after the first wave, the demo shows off even more of the game's depth. Even as it seems your supplies are depleted, you can scavenge for ammo, fuel, and bandages, as well as repair and re-arm the enemy's tanks to use against him.

Finally, after the second wave, the demo switches from offense, to defense, as you have to now attack the city (which gets reinforced by Germans again along with their rocket launching friend) and destroy the nebalwarfer.

I think this demo is great, and its definantly only what you make of it. If you honostly want to put your unit by some cover and watch him pop in and out to shoot enemies, fine, go right ahead, but if you'd rather have someone else distract the panther tank while you circle around the rear, under fire, and plug him with a well deserved moltov, then repair the tank and turn it on the enemy to win the battle? Thats fine too.

If your turned off by having a three man (which becomes five man a little later in the battle) defend in heavily stacked odds where victory only seems to be a glisten of light at the end of the tunnel, you probably wont like the game at all. Most of it is "the tale" of how small groups of soldiers can make a huge difference while still maintaining realism, the true heroes of WWII, during the single player campaign. Yes, it requires tactics, and a damn lot of them too. From small unit tactics, to large platoon tactics when you get online and your feet wet in an awesome combat game. If you enjoy the latter, I suggest that you go out and buy the game if your impressed with what it can do and what the engine can pump out from what you've seen in the demo. There are mods for the game out there that I'm pretty sure you'll like, because it seems like you like to command a bit more troops than the single player campaign instead of having to stick with a small three to eight man squad (Storm over Europe is awesome).

Myself? I'm better at the small unit end, which is why I enjoy the demo level so much. Its a small number of men pitted in impossible odds, but they still come out victorious, then steal a tiger and shove it right up the german's rear.

As for the grenade part.. that doesnt happen in retail, you keep your gun in hand. The shell spawning out of mid air? Thats probably the rockets, and naturally your camera doesnt go high enough for you to see them in the air, not sure if a camera hack (IE: Move camera everywhere at the expense of lag when you have to render all of that crap at the far distances) allows you to see them or not. The truck problem about getting in and out, no idea what the heck you are saying there. For not commanding the troops, big deal. The demo is ment to show off how small unit tactics work in the game, something different from the usual RTS's that hoarding = good. The bigger the better.. not so in this game. And refueling the tank only makes it so the fight is a bit harder, and also to show how the game allows you to take from other, destroyed and disabled parts of the battlefield and apply them to yourself to resupply and make yourself useful again.

It does take tactics to win the demo, too. Laying a minefield or having a well placed sniper isnt tactics? Rushing behind the tiger with a moltov isnt tactics? Its all tactics, but as I assumed, maybe you just like large unit combat. I'll try to find you a site that has mods for the demo so you can play them and see what else you like. I think one gives you more units -- that might make you happy. ^.~

edit:: Found the link. And you dont have to steal that car, its a secondary objective, just get to the nebalwarfer before it destroys the house.

Oh uh, one more quick edit here. I'm not promising any of the links are still up or the mods will work properly. Its been a long time since I've touched anything related to the demo, although my hands were all over every mod there. I think you might want to try the Battle at the Crossroads or something to that extent that is on there. The mini map is screwed up for it, but its a much larger map.. its the map thats at the menu screen. So you might like it better than the demo. The behind enemy lines one is an infantry and light vehicles only, and no tanks, so you have a much better chance of winning. Its also at night.. so you might like that too. Give them all a whirl!

Are you saying when the car drives away on its own? (forget if it does) Or just getting the car in general with your own unit. Sorry, I'm dense. ^.^;;

Nononono.

When I have my regular joe selected, and I switch to direct control(or rather, try to), one of many things happen:

I don't get direct control.
He switches to grenades.
He switches to a grenade, and throws it at his own feet.
He switches to direct control.

Now, assuming I actually get direct control, from there 3 things happen:

I select the building, and...
he shoots it
He takes out a grenade, and throws it at his own feet
He takes out a grenade, throws it at his own feet, and deselects himself.

Now tell me, how in the royal hell am I supposed to play like this?
• HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
Are you playing direct control wrong? You say you select the building and he shoots it, thats because in direct control, where ever you click your soldier shoots. You aim with your cursor, you no longer can select things with it. When you really want to control your soldier in depth, you will be switching back and forth between direct control and RTS style to do different things in the world, but it all is seamless once you get used to it. I can guess one of two things that you are doing with direct control.

First Scenario:
You do get direct control (the yellow band around the soldier becomes a purple band)
You try to deselect your soldier by right clicking because you think something is wrong, but instead you switch to your secondary weapon, grenade, by right clicking.
You try to select the unit again after he has thrown the grenade in a haste to move him, and now realize that you are in direct control, even though you were in it the entire time.
Boom.

Second Scenario:
You select the building, but like I said, your mouse is an aiming cursor, so when you click, he shoots.
You try to deselect him again, by right clicking, and switch to grenade.
You repeat the above steps and...
Boom.

Or you might just be bugged in the demo for some really odd reason, are you sure you arent in direct control? Is the purple ring there instead of yellow, and is your cursor glowing with a picture of ironsights? Post something on the forums and check back tommorrow or later this evening to see whats up. I've never heard of this happening, so I definantly think your not in direct control when you think you are. Ctrl must be held on in order to stay in direct control if that is what you are using, once you let go of the key you exit. End is the key that toggles it on and off, and not the keypad one, but the one above your arrow keys.

Remember.. purple ring.

Is this game out yet? I never heard of it until now. (I usually avoid WWII games, but I'll make an exception for this one...)
• HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
*yawn* I just woke up.. *scratch scratch*

Oh uh, questions. Right n that. This game is realistic not to to be a simulator, but it doesnt feel arcady either. Armor penetration values make the game extremely realistic, and each weapon is modeled after itself in real life statitics.

Out of ten for realism I'd probably give it an eight.

As for if its out yet, heck yeah it is. ^^;
