My friends original PS2 is getting a constant "Disc read error", and him being lazy just went out and bought a new one.
He offered me the old one for $20, saying that this is a common problem among older models and Sony should fix it for free. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, would I have to ship the whole thing to Sony which would be a ton of money shipping? Or link me to some announcement claiming that they would fix it for free?
Thanks

Mhmm...yeah, I've um never opened up my PS2 before of course, but yeah, don't touch that.
Meh, you can easily order a replacement of the net.

Thats not the problem. The problem is its annoying as crap to have to unscrew all the stuff to plug it back in, as thats what supplies the power to the power / reset buttons
I can't watch DVD's and most of the games won't run without me restarting the PS2 like 10 times. I'll try the guide someone linked to, thanks someone!
it's had to suffer through being shoved in my LANbag, tossed around cars, being hit by things and several other forms of abuse
the one DRE was fixed by removing the fingerprint from the disc
I used it once and it fixed the problem, it was too dirty to read anything, I've had to use it only once more, it's been at least 2 years.
If that doesn't fix the problem... send it in and get it fixed.
