Ps2 Disc Read Error

My friends original PS2 is getting a constant "Disc read error", and him being lazy just went out and bought a new one.

He offered me the old one for $20, saying that this is a common problem among older models and Sony should fix it for free. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, would I have to ship the whole thing to Sony which would be a ton of money shipping? Or link me to some announcement claiming that they would fix it for free?

Thanks

No idea, my ps2 works fine so I never bothered checking this out. If it is true that sounds like a good deal though.

You'd have to ship it to Sony, and if it's out of warranty, pay a repair fee that'll rival the cost of a new retail PS2.

    <a href='http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars' target='_blank'>You can fix it yourself</a>

No need to send it to sony.

I second what waterboy said, fix it yourself. Though that guide does a few more then neccessary things. You don't have to take the bottom of the PS2 off, and you don't need to adjust that white gear (or atleast you don't 99% of the time) just swab the eye with rubbing alcohol and you are good.

Reminds me of my xbox. Only some games do it. ( I can play fable for hours with no problems, but MGS2 freezes up at 3 different points in the game, and the disc isn't scratched)

My PS2 has this error (good going Sony) with pretty much every game I actually would like to play. I dont touch Consoles anymore though so it just sits in the corner gathering dust.

You can easily fix it yourself, just whatever you do, DO NOT DISCONNECT THE SILVER BAND THINGY. You'll see what I mean.

Thats not the problem. The problem is its annoying as crap to have to unscrew all the stuff to plug it back in, as thats what supplies the power to the power / reset buttons

I have one of the earlier versions and i get it all the time.
I can't watch DVD's and most of the games won't run without me restarting the PS2 like 10 times. I'll try the guide someone linked to, thanks someone!

Well, Sony does free repairs for the Disc Read Error. Mine was so severe fiddling with the white gear didn't fix it. They even shipped it back for free.

i've had one DRE on my ps2 (got it shortly after mgs2:SoL came out)
it's had to suffer through being shoved in my LANbag, tossed around cars, being hit by things and several other forms of abuse
the one DRE was fixed by removing the fingerprint from the disc

I've had the same problem, tell your friend to get a disc that cleans out the disc trays (disc with cleaning thingy on the otherside)

I used it once and it fixed the problem, it was too dirty to read anything, I've had to use it only once more, it's been at least 2 years.

If that doesn't fix the problem... send it in and get it fixed.
