<div class="IPBDescription">does it even work?</div>Has anyone gotten Thunderbird's junk mail filter to actually do anything? And if so, what the hell is the trick? They pimp it all over their web site but I've yet to ever have 1 spam mail blocked...

Yes, most definitely. It probably won't block much (if any) spam at first - you have to tell the program the mail is spam by clicking on the "Junk" icon. That will set up a filter, and it will start reading the mail and judging what is and what is not junk. There are occasionally false positives, but it's rare.

Do you actually have it enabled? Go to:

Tools > Junk Mail Controls > Adaptive Filter

Enable that. Yeah it works beautifully.

i made a foolish mistake when i started using thunderbird - copied across my folder of spam mail from outlook (~2000 mails) and told thunderbird that they were all junk.

while it now catches all the spam, it also seems to catch any thing from any one who isnt in my contact list.... so things like invoices from ebay/paypal etc get caught aswell! quite annoying.

I've been using Thunderbird for about a year now, maybe a year and a half. It's pretty well-trained, I've grown accustomed to seeing an inbox with 6 or 7 messages fill up and then see the spam get filtered right before my eyes. Every once in a while I have to tag one myself, but it's just one click and I forget about it.

Plus the automagic filters you can set up are a godsend, I have folders for my friends (all of whose names are color-coded for even easier reference), family, official things, newsletters, etc. and I never have to move anything by hand. I heart Thunderbird.
