    As long as I don't have to pay license fees to procreate...

    Oh wait. I'm a geeky nerd. I don't procreate. >_>

    <!--QuoteBegin-Article+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Article)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->When US scientist Ananda Chakrabarty applied for the first patent on a living organism, a genetically engineered bacterium able to digest oil spills, the case ended up in the Supreme Court because the patent office did not want to patent life forms. Rifkin had filed the main amicus brief supporting the patent office.

    They lost. In a 5-to-4 decision, the court declared that patents could be issued on "anything under the sun that is made by man."
    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    This leads to an interesting paradox. The United States is supposedly a Christian country, a feeling we've seen grow in recent years, yet a court authority has therefore declared that man has created life, something that is seen as largely a taboo topic to Christian beliefs. (not to mention quite a few other religions, but this is an example) I wonder if anyone has noticed, and if so how they plan to reconcile that?

    The other point to wonder is why they bother. Throw as many patents & court orders as you like, there will always be another country willing to go the whole length. I hold the opinion the Coalition countries should attempt to embrace new developments & stay ahead of the game. There's bound to be problems, so I'd rather the threat I knew of, than the one unseen.

    Well, you kinda posted it in a lull time, I think. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    On-topic: this is just freaky. No seriously, patenting life.....actually, it's not so unprecedented. Patents have been issued for years for genetically-altered crops, so I suppose genetically-created animals was the next step.... <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Who else thought System Shock? Anyone?

    On topic, however, I think that if they're as intelligent as humans (even retarded ones), they should be treated as such, and therefore not be subject to patents. Or for that matter, ownership.

    Edit: Dogorillamanian bodyguards would freaking OWN. Loyalty to hell and back, strength of a gorilla, and the dexterity found in humans!

    I do not condone actually doing this, however.

    People own chimps, I think, and these hybrids are probably about as smart as those guys. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    When I can get a genetically built girl friend ill support it. Until then, I don’t really mind about experimenting with making humans as long as something useful to mankind comes from it.

    The real irony of course is that bacteria that can digest oil spills already exist, it's just a job performed by several individuals in sequence. What the people involved did was modify one organism with a specialised 'fertiliser' that encourages the bacteria to turn on its genes for breaking down crude oil. What they patented was the fertiliser from memory, but got a bonus AND were able to own the particular metabolic pathway they had got the bacteria to develop. They don't own the bacteria however, just bacteria with the pathway they helped develop.

    Other biological patents include using skin as a conductor for communicating with computers (Microsoft owns this I believe) and many kinds of GE. Animal patents have been around for ages as well, cows that produce insulin in milk for example have been patented for ages.
