What Is The Terror Of Death?

To me, the fear of that is that we die our work incomplete and that the joy of life to die knowing our task is done. What are your views?

There is nothing to fear. Death is an unescapable part of life, it would be silly to be afraid of it.

But people still do fear death.

People are afraid of death because the fear of death provides an evolutionary advantage. It's as simple as that.

Also, no one knows anything about what happens after you die. The unknown is scary, so people fear it.

No, you don't know. All the religions in the world have different, abitrary ideas of what the afterlife is. What makes any one of those religions more likely to know what's really going on, than the others?

No one knows what happens after death. Some people "think" they know what happens, but there is absolutely no way for them to be sure.

Yeah, and there aren't Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto, and Jainist prophets, are there? Every religion has prophets and every religion has figures that have said that they talk with god and every religion has holy books with revelations in them. There's nothing that makes Christianity different in these respects.

Two simple quotes keep me from fearing death basically.

"Death is not sad; the sad thing is that most people don't really live at all." - Socrates from Way Of The Peaceful Warrior

and a little story about a mother who lost her son

"I can't bear the pain and sorrow," she told her sister.
"My sister, did you mourn your son before he was born?"
"No, of course not," the despondent women replied.
"Well then, you need not mourn for him now. He has only returned to the same place, his original home, before he was ever born."

Also from Way Of The Peaceful Warrior

Ya, they are cool quotes, I know.

No it ain't Islam all da way! I mean, you get like 72 virgins! It's obviously the one true religion ™.

72? Islam is obviously way off base.

Everyone knows that the OTR (One True Religion) must incorporate the number 42 into everything!

Without fear, you're not really alive. Of course, without fear it's easier to live. I know that sounds odd, so allow me to explain. Without fear, it's very easy to make stupid decisions without thinking. The opposite can be true as well. Without fear, one can make smart decisions that would have been otherwise hampered by a trite and irrational fear of an undesired result, however miniscule. But ultimately, fear is what keeps us from meeting our untimely end at the hands of consequence that could have otherwise been avoided by listening to a rational concern; a fear.

*EDIT*: Note to self, spell check things more often.

death is such a large thing in our lives but we know nothing of it and i don't think we ever really will. But its just one more experiance in the big scheme of things i guess.

The answer to the question of death lies within the human brain. It may not be too long before we can study the brain, in real-time, to determine what exactly happens at death.

Death I fear not. The thought of passing away in my sleep and no one discovering it is frightening.

Natural death - Death in sleep or a heart attack or old age - Ok. Not too terrible
Unnatural death - Murdered, crushed under a weight, falling and going splat, shot in the heart - Terrible. Ph33r.

He'd have to be deaf too I suppose, otherwise he'd hear something loud coming and think something along the lines of "eep".

I'm not exactly worried about death, I don't want to die but it'll happen so there's nothing I can say or do that will change it. Just something you've got to deal with. I wouldn't go so far has saying "terror", that's a little extreme in my case anyway.

no Christinaity isn't the "true" religion. seeing how theres lots of diffrent versions of it. like protesent, lurthern, babtist, LDS, cathlic , all of them believe in christ, and I have my personal feelings about which church is true. which I won't share with you know because it wouldn't change anything if I did

I dunno. If no-one finds my body, then probably no-one cares whether I'm alive or dead.

I'd rather die in my sleep and never be found then get mauled by a bear and die a slow agonizing death and have my body recovered in a torn up carcas

I suppose people do fear death is that of the unknown, that is when people are terrified.
I know that's been said before, but it seems almost paradoxical that people are scared of what they know, and equally of what they do not know.

I know that a cobra is something to be weary of, due to it's toxic venom, however I don't know what the venom is called, nor what the symptoms of the poisoning are. The knowledge of the danger of the cobra is scary, but equally is not knowing the symptoms. Several kinds of snakes look like the cobra, but are not venomous. so just being bitten by something that looks like a cobra, is not good enough to know that i'm poisoned by it.

But, then again, if I knew the symptoms, then when I was bitted, then I would know that I had been bitten, and that I was going to die unless I got the anti-venom. That would calm me down a bit, but it would send me into hysteria, knowing that I was posined and would likely be killed by something that I didn't fully understand it's reasoning for attacking me.

I suppose that I'm not too scared of death, as I like to take life some step at a time. And even then, some people are happier when they are dead, than when they are alive.
Quoth Final Fantasy 7. "Don't cry mother, a person you knew very well was coming to see you, but he has already returned to the Planet, and he is very happy there..."

I'm probably the only person on these boards to have so close to death that I could taste it. That being said, I wasn't scared when it happened. I felt peaceful, nigh serene (though that was probably caused by the massive amounts of endorphins [sp?] being pumped through my blood at the time).

My seminary teacher's mom drowned and had her heart stop and she was revived... she didn't see any lights or tunnels or what have you , but she said it was pretty calm drowing and kinda relaxing... so maybe its not that bad of a way to go

Counting from Experience has i died in a car accident 6 months ago.

it is not that bad you do get nice views of your body from the outside which is interesting

But my advice is keep alive as much as you can and live to full

Do not suffer my fate

Personally I'm just upset that I won't get to see what happens after I'm dead. I wanna see Jetson's style life, with people going into space to go shopping (lower prices, of course) and aliens and everyone with a hover car and stuff.

And I just know that it's gonna happen about 2 years after I die.
