You're bringing tears to my eyes as I remember my days back in SG. Even though I am pretty well versed in english, I did use Singlish a lot back there, mainly cause its how everyone else speaks. Well actually it depended on what the person I'm speaking to is using. If he's talking in Singlish, I'd use Singlish, if not I'd be all proper english speaking like.

I don't really have a problem with using Singlish as long as its in the correct context. It's when other Singaporeans use singlish without consideration to others who are unable to understand it that I want to take a beating stick to people. That gunbound comic is a good example really.

Hmm come to think of it I actually still do use singlish even here when I'm speaking with my sister. Bad habits are difficult to shake.

    Gah, it's blaspheme!

you should all be glad you are down in Singapore, where I can't come and kill you.

Reminds me of the street language in Blade Runner.

Hey, wikipedia calls Singlish a creole language so it can't be that bad

Wow. This article is quite thorough and well written. Wonder how many Singaporeans helped with this article cause the english doesn't seem horrible

Many of you may find it shocking, feel disgusted, maybe amused by this act of blasphemy, but judging from the replies from the thread, this is definitely new to yall

Over here in Singapore, Singlish is very common, its the way of life here, perfectly normal actually. Almost everything has some sort of Singlish in it. One very simple -and obvious example- is with the various media types. TV, Radio, down to our daily paper sometimes. U either read about it, or hear it.

Theres been alot of debates going on around on how to tackle the problem, but our governments attempts for change and improvement isnt very encouraging. Hell, now they may even consider teaching Melayu (Malay Language) as a 3rd language (very much due to our neighbours race).

When u have a combination of different races living here, with differing languages and a dozen other dialets (trust me u dont want to hear those...it an't pretty) u have Singlish.

P.S Reading the mails was entertaining...bring more leh!

Oh and if anyone wants soe Singlish references, there was a comic I linked a few pages back, in case anyone missed it.

Oh, and people in Hong Kong actually talk semi-Singlish. Why semi-Singlish?

It's rather simple ; their English standard is WAY below that of Singapore. Heck, my school is one of the worst schools out there, but teaches the best English, for some odd reason....

OMG they are discriminating us lah! They all so siao! </singlish>
