oh my I need a kleenex or paper towel here... I was waiting for this day. I'm getting kind of sick of using BB4Win

KDE is a "desktop environment" or shell basically.. complete with window skinning

More importantly, they're porting QT! That opens up a lot of open source software to windows that was previously unavailable, such as Amarok, which is in my oppinion the best audio player ever. Even better than foobar2000.

Ooh, I'm so happy! I can imagine using Konqueror instead of Windows Explorer or A43! <3 to Konqueror!

    *blink*

    sooo

they are making KDE (a windows manager for linux that is designed to have the look and feel of Windows) ussable in Windows?

    right, what ever.

now, BB4Win, would that be Black Box?

and if so LINK ME NOW!

I still don't get this fasination with KDE, Black Box or Flux Box (or just about anytihng) always seemed better to me.

What does this even mean? IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME. Does it basicly mean you can use Linux in Windows, looking like Windows? I don't know.

    Ugh.

Sorry, but the impression I got from the Linux desktop interfaces is that they just aren't as smooth as Windows's.

You can already use a lot of Linux apps on Windows with cygwin, this is saying that QT is being ported, so a large portion of apps that could not previously be ported easily can now be ported to native Win32 stuff, including, but not limited to the KDE Window manager.

    :edit:

That would be because you are used to Explorer, which is underpowered and dumbed down for the 'average' user. KDE is still pretty dumbed down, but it's applications pwn the crap out of a lot of things.

ok, do you know what a GUI is? (Graphical User Interface)

that is what you interact with in windows every day (Windows is both your OS and your Window Manager. If you ussed DOS then Dos would be your OS and you would have no Window Manager)

KDE is a Window Manager for Linux (instead of inputting all your commands via the prompt you use the pretty graphics).

They are now porting in from Linux (an OS) to Windows (a different OS).

Aparently there are some apps designed for KDE (the window manager) that will work with it also.

    and thanks for the linkeh

The second part of that sentence was not pointed at him, but rather Explorer.

What I did intend to point at em though, was that he's accustomed to using it, so seeing somthing different such as KDE or Blackbox is a little shocking.

Sorry if I sounded rude, I just want my amarok

I use BBLean currently for Win98: BBLean+BBInterface, BBCalender, AnalogEx, BBAnalog

I just got through reading the bugs section for KDE + QT for windows and aside from the numerous bugs for Win98se, XP still has a memory leak problem that would bug the hell out of me. I hope someone here tries it out anyway.

Ah, text isn't the best emoting tool.

However, ease of use doesn't necessarily mean "dumbed down". I've tried KDE, and it was feature-packed, but not all that intuitive. Things seemed less refined, which is what I think the "smooth" comment was referencing.

    Amen to that, brother.

Now, I can understand the desire for a Qt port, but KDE itself? Ew. When people replace the explorer shell, it's because they want something more minimal and functional. KDE is neither. It'll be like adding a whole huge lot of those IE toolbars.

I thought there had been a Windows port of KDE for years? (like, Win98 days at least) Or was that Gnome?
  • CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
There may have been, but I doubt it was free because KDE runs off of QT. Untill now, QT was comercial for Windows.

There may have been other things (like litestep) that emulated the look, or things like cygwin that emulated the linux stuff. This is for native ports, which are good.
