:edit: ah, the site has marine ads on it
Gamefaqs does rock, though.

Gamers are one of the key demographics the army/marines go for. This is no major surprize to me.

surprise*
This is surprising to me. While the army has embraced gamers for a long time, the heads of the marines have been pretty hard-**** toward almost everything 'new'.
That is pretty wierd. But its nice that their telling of Iwo Jima: I'm proud to say my Great Uncle was in that battle, and made it out. Though, he's never told anyone what he saw while he was there...he always goes silent around it. We've learned not to bring it up. Too bad, really, with my <3 of WW2.
Marine perfect recruit = Young Male w/ Aggressive Tendencies
See: America's Army
Hardcore Gamer stereotype = young male with less than ideal physical makeup, diet, health, sleeping habits, discipline, motivation
Ideal Marine Corps Recruit = young male in good shape, eats right, is healthy, knows how to take care of himself, is disciplined, dreams of making something of himself and serving his country for the right reasons.
you = wrong
____________________________________________
Q: do you guys know the real reason that they would advertise there?
A: the only thing that young men do almost ubiquitously is electronic gaming.
a recruiter is doing his job by signing up kids with determination and heart and desire and dreams, and the raw ability and potential to make it happen. that's the truth. if every potential recruit could be like that, recruiters' jobs would be a hell of a lot easier.

Heh, the only requirement beyond physical fitness for the military is the ability to follow without question, I actually talked to an army recruiter and he said I shouldn't consider it because I was "opinionated" As if thats a bad thing. Har.

I love that advert.
-----
We see a marine legging it.
"Is this your limit?"
We see him jump into a river.
"Is it here?"
We see him crawl through a tiny tube, underwater.
"Here?"
He gets his trouser leg caught on something. He's gonna drown!
"Here?"
He breaks free, and just manages to reach air before he starts breathing in water.
"Here?"
As he's gathering his breath and has pulled himself out of the water, he gets attacked by a naked crazy man.
"Here?"
After killing the crazy man, enemy troops jump out of the bushes and pump him full of lead.
"Here?"
Then they start stabbing him.
"Here?"
Then they coat him in honey and set bees on him.
"Here?"
The bees spontaneously combust, setting him on fire.
"Here?
"If you said 'yes', don't bother signing up.
99.99% need not apply!"
Not being the 0.01% suits me juuuuuust fine.

Bit of a nerve there eh, a little too defensive about it...
Hey but what do I know, I only talked to a recruiter. The "M" in marines might as well stand for "Mcdonalds"

Meh, i was talking to my cousin the other day (just got home from Iraq, was his second tour) he said that they have hundreds of xboxes, ps2s, and computers on every base.
He already finished half-life 2 over there didnt think they would give him any time.

Well honestly, how hard do you think that rolling over a third world country is?

i'm not one to tolerate instigation and the breeding of ignorance in my own thread.
And what's so special about the ad? Wasn't there tons of that on all gamespy sites(ie fileplanet, PHL) a while back?
Join the military and then say that.
Have some flipping respect, at the very least.
If America is so bad, why are you still here, Mr. 20 year old still living with his parents.

it's just a little bit random. the Marine Corps has, from what i've seen thus far, never advertised on any private website other than their own (marines.com) and those of their close affiliates. it's a dramatic turn in the advertising department to go from very limited and reserved web advertising to full-tilt banners and wallpaper at a very unrelated site o_O
Hey this is the beauty of our all volunteer military, you don't have to serve but you do have to be badgered with advertisements.
This could go ether way, the marines could get some good guys that might never have considered joining up. Or they could get a bunch of skinny malnourished CS players sucking up our tax dollars before failing out their second week of training.
Honestly I don't mind some silly adverts as much as I'd mind a non-volunteer military.
Our adverts for the armed forces kick ****, although the current best are the ones for the Royal Navy. The whole set-up is great, with the big diplomatic debate and stuff.
(At least all the People in the UK know what I'm blabbering about.)
Plus we aren't set upon by flash advertism, which is nice too.
