<div class="IPBDescription">come on in and take a gander</div> I personally believe that racism is going downhill , I live in Utah and I don't know many bigots. I personally don't think I'm racist or discriminate... but people being sexist is another story. most men now a days think if there white there better then someone who is not white.. but a lot of men tend to think there better then their wives and all women for that matter.... I'm not saying all do, I just think more people are sexist then racist. I personally think neither should be around.
Case n' point
I work at a grocery store as a bagger. and lots of custemers come in all the time and its my job to ask if they want help out to their cars after I'm done bagging their stuff.... and I don't have execpt statistics , but women ask for help out about.... 10 times more then men do... and sometimes it really bugs me so I look forward to male custumers more so then women custumers.... does this make me sexist? maybe I suppose. but I understand that more women shop then men so of course more women are going to ask for help out... but yeah... thats just an example of how I'm not racist... but I could be considered a tiny bit sexist.

read "the da vinci code" for an lengthy explenation why, I don't have enough time for a true discussion forum post right now as I need to be at the radio station that is 1/2 a mile way in 10 min before my show starts, I'm on foot. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Yea sorry about that.
That's natural, too. Most women seem to think they're better than men. *shrug*
As for gender roles...I'm not so sure about that. It depends, I guess.
Inductive reasoning by its nature is inherently unprovable and biased.
I believe in opening doors for ladies, seeing how its a sign of respect more so then a gesture of... "here's its called a door, this is how it works *opens door*"
I'm probably what you would call a reverse-sexist (if you're going with your grocery store example), as I enjoy doing things for other people if they ask me (I don't physically go around asking people if they need help, I'm not social enough for that), especially if they're female. Like my friend, if she needs help I'll help her with her paper or whatever, before getting around to my work (even if I'm behind), but if were one of my other friends I'd probably say "you'll have to wait until I'm done...in X minutes or so."
I am, however, a little more cautious in heavily populated areas with minorities (generally hispanics that can't speak English well), since I've known situations that have ended badly. Your world view develops from past events, and there's nothing you can really do about it. Just because someone says "blacks aren't dangerous" doesn't mean all blacks aren't dangerous. My dad got mugged by 5 black guys in a back alley in Milwaukee when he was about 20 (he said "You know those Looney Tunes cartoons where the stars fly around someone's head? That's what I saw, they were kicking me in the head and chest so much I literally saw stars.", and didn't have a very high opinion of blacks as long as I knew him - but he didn't go out of his way to ridicule them, and he did generally like numerous black people, especially the guy across the hall from his apartment.
I see very few people actually going around saying "I'm a guy and I'm better than all you women!" or "asians suck!" or anything like that. I'd say the worst thing I've seen is mild discrimination about Jews, which doesn't really concern race or gender. As long as you keep your previous experiences in check while meeting new people it should really matter. Although, maybe I'm one of the only people that actually tries to judge people a completely blank slate (which is why I need to talk to someone for a few minutes to get a base impression).
Racism.. I don't see that much in the larger towns. However if you were to go to a small town here in Sd, say less then 1500, you would have extreme racism. To the point where the whole town of white people run anyone of any minority out.
Case in point: Miller SD, one of the most close minded towns I can think of. Ran off not one, not two but three different minority families in a span of 10 years. First was black, second was islamic, (not middle east looking either, they were white), third was jewish. Sadly, that town will never learn. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Albiet that case is very extreme it does still happen, just only when you have a small group of people in an isolated environment where they are not used to something different.
I find I'm more predajice agaisnt people due to social back round more so then race. like if someone is "ghetto" or something I'm not really all that open to them as I would be to an upright clean cut looking citizin, I know pre judging people is bad so I try to find the truth in people....
but if they say you can't read a book by its cover... I think thats true, but I allso think that the book cover gives you an idea what's in the book
I steriotype people in my head before I ever talk to them. I steriotype Caucations, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Europians, etc.
I'm not hatefully racist, but I do form oppinions about people based on race. I have a hard time imagining anyone not doing this.
However, I don't hate anyone based on their race. I usually leave that to their personality. It's sad, but a lot of races seperate themselves (in general, not everyone).
I really don't know how to explain it very well.
Solution: Hold the door open for everyone, no matter if it's Hulk Hogan or some old lady who looks like half of her time is spent trying to keep breathing. If anyone complains, smack them.
Caboose, are you trying to validate yourself? Not everyone forms opinions based on race or sex. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I don't know if those count as racism or sexism, though.

That's not racism and/or sexism, because racism/sexism are hateful by their nature. Stereotyping is just a form of inductive reasoning, which is not the same thing as prejudice.
Along the same lines as Cyndane (Lanfear?) said, you haven't seen racism until you've lived in a mostly white village in the countryside. When I was a kid, I lived in a small town in the countryside, which had a population of ~500 white people and precisely one black person. The poor guy was always getting the **** beaten out of him, just because he was black.

Uh no, that dosen't make you sexist, it makes the women who could easily carry or push the cart users.
Also, holding the door open for anyone, male, female, somewhat less then alive and somewhat more alive then dead, is plain old being polite. If someone chews you out for it, just say you do this for anyone and not them specifically based on <insert reason for being a nutjob here>.
Now, what I believe is that some jobs can be done by both men and women, and a few jobs can only be done by one or the other. There's no reason why a woman can't operate a crane and other such things.
This isn't sexist, though I'm sure that some people are thinking so. Sexism is a belief that one sex is superior to the other. My believe is that men are superior to women in SOME areas and women are superior to men in others. Neither are worth less than they other. They both play an important role in the survival of the species, which is what ultimately matters in the end.
That being said, I hate most feminists. "We want the same rights that you have! No, wait! You were mean to us! We want MORE rights than you!" Pathetic.
Who would build their houses?
Who would have our babies? :O

Or "We want equal rights, but not equal responsibility"
