Ipod Mini, Take 2

same price, more gigs, better battery
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7017277/
"Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple unveiled a new “iPod mini” that holds 6 gigabytes of music -- or about 1,500 songs -- and will sell for about $250, while it cut the price of its 4 gigabyte or 1,000-song model, introduced about one year ago, to about $200."
This makes the $250 tag much more worth it (as opposed to the original iPod mini, which is 4gb with a 6-8 hr battery life). My roommate's thinking of picking one up and trying to sell his original mini... I have to wonder if anyone's really still going to be interested in buying the original ones, though. :S

Oh yeah, lets trust a company who can't even do their original market right. Smart choice.
Apple and iPod are in my doghouse right now . . .
I've had my 15 gigger for about eight months now, and I accidentally dropped it last week, from a height of about two frigging feet. It completely stopped working.
When I called tech support, they told me that the $50 extortion-- ahem, AppleCare 'protection' plan (more aptly titled: Crappy, over-priced extended warranty) wouldn't cover accidental damage, even if it was of the 'normal wear and tear' variety.
(Yes, I was stupid enough to mention that I dropped it-- I was flustered and heading out for a long drive, which is precisely the type of situation I bought my iPod for in the first place)
Bear in mind, I've spent close to $500 through the iTunes music store since I bought the stupid thing.
So, they told me to send it in, and they'd let me know if they could/would fix it.
Now I wait, and see whether or not I can buy the 40 gig unit I was meaning to buy anyway, or abandon the whole product line out of stubbornness and principle.

The only good thing Apple has produced, besides (and this is debatable) their Ipods, is OS10. Their hardware is consistently overpriced and underperforming except for the very top end G5, year after year after year. They succeed in cherry-picked Photochop benchmarks, not too much else.
Going by sound quality alone the Creative Line kick the butt off an iPod.
Plus I'm using a creative soundcard right now, and its awesome and working perfectly.
Oh and EAX kicks ****!

If by "can't even do their original market right" you mean "makes a superior product" then yes.

I dont think he means that. Think harder.
Release Drivers to fix old Drivers bugs, but sadly, they don't, and in fact create more bugs with said drivers.
Terrible Customer Support
Hellishly Awful Website(in the sense that you can't EVER get what you want off of it).
Terrible Documentation.
Underperforming Soundcards
Releasing Products Labeled "2" even though its just the same with a 100 MHz bigger bus size, which is still inadequate, even for their market.
In fact, the only thing I've ever had thats good out of an Audigy Sound card, or anything Audigy/Creative for that matter, is one line of their speakers is actually pretty nice. Too bad Klipsch' cheapest is still better. Oh, and I thought we hated Monopolies here on these forums? Too bad they happen to have the sound card market all to themselves.

But yet their MP3 players are still better than iPods in nearly all respects. Funny that.
This isn't about speakers or soundcards (I don't even have a Creative soundcard personally, so I wouldn't know if they suck).
No no no. People on this forum hate everything. Go back and look through threads that people post about things they enjoy. Not one single thread can be found where someone has not posted a comment about how much the things the thread starter enjoys suck. Also, nine times out of ten, it's the same people. Funny that.
YOU GAWD DAYUM SPOILT KIDDIES THESE DAYS!!
1. Creative's marketing department is filled with empty-headed morons. They go along with alot of hoo hah but their ads don't exactly give you that warm feeling on the inside.
2. The interface is awful. It's improved a little on the newer models, but god damn, the interface is worse than on creative's website.
3. Design. Sure, some people may like the design of that newer 5gig mini from creative but trying to sell the design using 10 "awesome" that "give you choice" is, well, a bad idea. And i won't even begin on how terrible the 1.8" based models look.
4. Technical Support. The last time i dealt with Creative tech support, i was frustrated, irritated and highly ticked off. They responded with useless anwsers that were well, insulting to intelligence and would not even repair my zen for a fee.
At the end of the day, i ended up with a $250 brick and a broken toe. So what did i do? I bought an iPod. Sure, the battery life is well, embarassing, but hey, it does what i want well and it looks damn good to boot.
Agreed.
I do own a 40gig ipod, and have since they first came out, so maybe I'm biased.
But I tried my friends Crative mp3 player and it was a chore to use compared to the ipod.

It boggles my mind as well. Do you all seriously need 30-40 gigs of mp3?
Even 1 gig looks like an overkill to me.
I don't buy this my hardware is bigger than yours thing. I can't even tell the difference between the sound from mp3, cassette, music CD.
Are you kdding me? The Xen Xtra has the best interface of any MP3 player I've ever used, and I've never seen a bad review of it. The folder navigation system is extremely useful and easy to use compared to the iPod's, even better than my Rio Karma's for large playlists.

That's why they're on your hard drive. So you can listen to them on teh computars :O.
The iPod has good disk space, amazing design, amazing interface, and easy to use software.
Creative is cheaper, sure, but that's all it has going for it.
Take a look at the specs for your random 2.5" HDD. Most will quote a shock resistance of around 350Gs to disable the drive permanently. This is only when the drive is not spinning, and the heads are in a parked position. When the drive is spinning, the heads are held electromagnetically in a position about 1/3 the size of a grain of dust. Just imagine what happens to a vinyl player when it gets knocked in use? A horrible scratch appears in the beloved record of your choosing. Vinyl players spin at about 36rpm, or up to 72rpm in some cases. With a rotation size of 37.7 inches, that gives you a small scratch. Your average small HDD has a rotational size of 7.9 inches, just spins at a minimum of 4500rpm. That is why your player died. The heads get well and truely **** in most 2 foot drops whilst running. iPods only need to be displaying, and the drives will be running.
Don't blame someone for something that's not their fault. My 20GB pod has been working for bloody ages. It's never been dropped, and stays either in the cradle, or in the pouch. Best way to keep them imo
