<div class="IPBDescription">just killing all lifeforms is for wimps</div> With all the recent hoopla about the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie coming up, I recently stumbled upon this: <a href='http://ned.ucam.org/~sdh31/misc/destroy.html' target='_blank'>http://ned.ucam.org/~sdh31/misc/destroy.html</a>.
To quote the page, "This is not a guide for wusses whose aim is merely to wipe out humanity"

If nothing else, read some of the more humorous sections like the preamble and general strategy.

    Interesting.

Also linked on that page, someone studied the Death Star <a href='http://www.theforce.net/swtc/ds/#superlaser' target='_blank'>way too much</a>.

"total existance failure". I'm so going to find a way to use that in a sentence before I die.

    ... blah blah blah...
Detonating all the nuclear weapons ever created simultaneously, either all at one location or strategically placed around the globe. This will irradiate pretty much the entire globe and cause a nuclear winter but will actually destroy very little of the planet itself

    Good read!
However it got pretty depressing when it started to talk about The Big Crunch, The Big Rip and Natural Decay.

Tho I wouldn't mind seeing those things take place.... Makes me want to become an everlast diety that oversees the entire universe. Yeah.

There is something the author fails to account for in the scenario of the von Neumann machines. The mass of the earth doesn't magically go away; it is simply transformed into these machines. The same gravitational force will be exerted by the von Neumann machines as was previously exerted by the Earth, so the accumulation of machines will remain held together, just as the Earth was. This accumulation of von Neumann machines will still, technically, be a planet.

Thats probably why he suggests you should program them to use some sort of propulstion to hurl themselves into the sun.

For rocket propulsion to work in that scenario, the rocket engines would have to propel their exhaust at the Earth's escape velocity or greater. Also, the von Neumann machines would have to gobble up the atmosphere as well, or the exhaust would need much more speed and/or density to counteract air resistance.

Still, you say it yourself: "A" planet. Whether it is still the same planet is a question of definition. It is made of the same materials as the earth was, that's true. However, the resemblance to earth is questionable.
I guess it comes down to individual preference in the end.

Some kind of massive Death ray fired from a giant ship in space. You know the kind I mean. Like the Big Gun in Quake 2. Something that can envelope something the size of the Sun in it's cascade. Think weapons from Homeworld 2 or some such.

Armageddon does not destroy the Earth, nor even everyone on it. One third of the human population is wiped out repeatedly (at least one third and then another third of what's left) but then not only does the remnant survive, but God's people return from heaven and get to live in a city roughly the size of half the United States. This is as far from our definition of destroying the Earth as you can reasonably get, as the planet is still there AND people still live on it. Thanks <b>Fieari</b> for coming up with this, and Dave Babbitt and Raj Sandhu for two minor corrections.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Actually, the document specifically states that the objective is to cause the Earth to become no longer a planet.

For the purposes of what I hope to be a technically and scientifically accurate document, I will define our goal thus: <b>by any means necessary, to render the Earth into a form in which it may no longer be considered a planet.</b> Such forms include, but are most definitely not limited to: two or more planets; any number of smaller asteroids; a quantum singularity; a dust cloud.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
