Problem Joining Game

I have the fully updated HLDS installed on one machine, with the NS v3 beta 5 server running through it. On another machine on the same network, I've installed the NS v3 beta 5 client onto my Half-Life installation (which is at the current version). When I click Multiplayer, then LAN games, my server does show up. However, if I click Join Game, then it tells me that I can't connect to a server running a 'different protocol version'.

Both machines are running Windows 2000, and there are no network issues that I can see. I'm pretty new to the whole server admin thing, so I was hoping that someone here could shed some light on what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you don't have a firewall on your server? Do other things work (like ping, network file sharing, other games, etc)?

Sounds like one you dont have set both computers to tcpip.

Uninstall all ipx protocolls and make shure that you have tcpip protocols installed for your relevant network adapters.

Are they both running on Steam? (different protocols = won and steam generaly)

In your config settings for the server, do you have sv_lan set to 1?

Just to respond to some of the questions...

Yep, I'm positive no firewall is present. Both computers respond to ping, and I have verified that file sharing works.

I just checked the settings, and neither computer has IPX installed.

Well, as far as I know they're both running on Steam. I'm really quite new to this, so I just made the assumption. I mean, when the server starts it specifically mentions ' Steam AUTH server' or some such thing. And I don't have WON installed on the machine running the client.

And yes, I do have sv_lan set to 1. Should it not be?

I'm starting to become quite baffled with this problem myself. Does anyone have any other ideas I might try?

hehe, missread your post thought you said it wasn't in LAN games (thus the sv_lan 1 Q)

    ummm

the best way to do this is do it all via steam.

Start up steam on the host. Launch the server via that.

start up steam, launch the game via that.

and yah, the server forum people would probably solve this right quick <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
