How Can I Only Use 3-sided Polys In Softimage Xsi?

NS can only use 3-sided polies and it seems to me that the default is at 4 sided polys in XSI. When i convert it to an smd will it make all the polies 3-sided for me? I want the default to be 3-sided so I have an accurate count and stuff >_>
