Severe Lag

I have been playing NS for over 2 years now, and have been having this problem on and off. It seems to randomly come and go, lasting for periods of several months, but has multiplied in severity since 3.0 final. I will usually have around 50ping while in the ready room, however once i'm in the game and something happens (i.e. a rine shoots at me) my ping spikes. If i have 3 or more people shooting/biting at me it will reach over 400, and hmg's do even more than that(i've broken 1000ping in servers where i'm getting 40ish until someone shoots...). I'm currently running windows XP(all updates installed), 3.0ghz amd, 512mb ddr memory, 120gb hd (80gb free), and cable internet (usually get over 400k/sec while dling files). I have not experienced this problem with any other online games or with other halflife mods. It has made the game all but unplayable, and to even begin to have fun i have to join servers with no more than 4 or 5 players. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your <u>steam</u> (not NS) connection settings are not set to 56k. Happened to me after a steam update once.
