I Can't Get Steam To Work

When I start steam, and try to join a NS game, it just pops up the Browse Game page. It's like it doesn't recognize Half Life, even though I have it, and NS installed.

    Have you ran the hazard course on HL1 at least once? You need to run it so it can create the important directories and files.

    - Make sure you have registered a Half-Life CD key to your account.
    - Check to see if Half-life is greyed out under the "My Games" list.
    - If it is, double-click and let it download and install.
    - If it isn't, or you've finshed downloading and installing it, double-click it again to start the game, then go to "New Game" and select "Hazard Course"
    - Enter the game and run around for a few seconds, then exit the game <i>and</i> Steam
    - Install NS (Make sure you deleted the previous install)
    - Restart Steam, it should work now.
