Hi. Been wanting to play NS for a long time, but didn't have Half-Life. Then I got Savage, played with it and had fun, forgot about it for a while, then I got Half-Life for Christmas, so I decided to play it for a while. The multiplayer games I've mostly played are Mechwarrior 4(long time ago), and Tribes 2, all non comp.

Are there a lot of NS servers out there? I keep refreshing the server list and mark each NS server as a favorite (different ones seem to pop up everytime) and most of them seem to have zero players.

    Hey there Searagemore, There are acutally quite a lot of servers out there, all you have to make sure about is that you've got the latest version, which is now version 3.0Final, and just browse for servers when you've opened NS. That way, Steam automatically filters the server list for NS 3.0, and give you a list of the right servers, so you don't get things like mis-matches. Also, most servers don't show up in the Steam Master Server List, that you get when you open up the servers list, without going into a game. That might be why you're not seeing too many servers.

    If you've played a lot of Savage, then you'll be loving Classic games of NS. These are maps with an "ns_" prefix, like "ns_tanith", which has to be a personal favourite of mine.

    If you're looking for something akin to Tribes, then try the Combat games, prefixed with co_, like co_daimos.

    But try to garner your skill with the Classic games, as they are more fun to play.
    If you need anything, just ask us. Most of us will help. Xtof will climb over people to help new players out, as will I, to a certain extent...

    Thanks for replying. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I've installed NS, but I don't know how to launch it.

    Edit: Never mind. Think I figure it out. I used my brain. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    No problem.

    In regards to starting NS. When you;ve got HL1 run at least once, with the Training Room level started (Start New Game-> Training Room), walk about for a few seconds, then quit the game (Press Esc, then click Quit, then Ok).
    Right-click on the Steam icon in your system tray (botton right hand corner of the screen, assuming you've not moved it), and click Exit Steam.
    Install NS v3.0 (Which you'll have pre-downloaded, hopefully)
    Wait for the install to finish.
    Restart Steam, then fins Natural Selection under the "Third Party Games" list of Steam.

    All the mods, except TFC, HLDM, Counter-Strike, and Day Of Defeat (ie all those not made by Valve, or affliates) go under Third Party Games. Just double click on Natural Selection, wait for it to open, then configure your controls under "Options", When you're done, just click on "Join Game" and the Server Browser wil come up, chock full of NS v3.0 servers for you to play on.

    Have fun, but don't forget the forum, whiere you should post thoughts on the game, etc.
    Seeing as you're a fresh pair of eyes, then you should notice things that these old "Pros" that lurk here haven't noticed.

    I like you. You figured it out on your own. The world needs more people like you.

    EDIT: Like you in a manly, non-homoerotic way.

    There are about 400 NS severs running at a given time. At least thats what I get in steam.

    Depending on the time of day will determin if the servers have people in them. The server I play in ns2.joe.to gets filled from 6:00est to sometime after I go to bed. Choosing the right server can make all the difference with your gaming experience. Keep trying different ones untill you find one you like.
