Dropping Frames In Premiere Pro 7

Frames Dropped During Capture [from DV]
I've got a drama video to work on, we've filmed most of the stuff and we're trying to offload it onto the computer via firewire and adobe premiere professional 7 so that we can edit it. When we tried to capture the video from the DV camera, it was very laggy - it dropped a lot of frames. We've also tried a different camera and the get same problem.
We've looked around, asked people, googled, etc, but we can't figure out how to fix it. Does anybody have any information on the problem that might help? Thanks.
Btw, I've defragged and have plenty of free space (50 gigs)....
P4 3.0 ghz
120 gig hdd
skymaster 1394 firewire
asus p4p800s-x motherboard

Of course you didn't list your RAM, so I am only taking a guess, if it does happen to meet at least the 1 gig requirement, then you might want to take a look as see how much other crap is running on the computer at the time. That also makes a huge difference. You need to remember, when you are using video editing software you NEED insane amount of PC specs in order for everything to run correctly. Or... just have nothing on the computer but the video editing software.
(edit)
Also firewire isn't the greatest for capture video while it is running, neither is USB, if you can use a seperate capture box, and if you actually spent the money on Preimere you should have something like a Dazzle, or Pinnacle capturing box. If not, then you really shouldn't be attempting professional video editing.

Hey mate, that was my mate Tom posting that, it's my computer he is talking about though.
I forgot to mention that it does have 1 gig of ram. It's a new computer too. We've tried capturing with every program shut down, like everything, and still the same result ensues...
The thing that is bugging me is I remember having this problem on a mates computer and I can't remember how we fixed it. It's driving me up the wall!

I suspect that the problem might be with the firewire card or the drivers, but it could also be a cable. Recording video needs a constant amount of data to be transferred, so if there's a connection problem somewhere, you will lose a lot of frames. If you know for sure that these are working ok, than my suggestion is to see if you can capture video on someone else's computer- you know it's probably not the camera so check to make sure it's not your hardware. If it still doesn't work, than it's either a software problem, or a user problem, although I doubt that its either.

That does not help.

Prove it. (In PMs, I don't want to derail.)
