Dropping Frames In Premiere Pro 7

Frames Dropped During Capture [from DV]
I've got a drama video to work on, we've filmed most of the stuff and we're trying to offload it onto the computer via firewire and adobe premiere professional 7 so that we can edit it. When we tried to capture the video from the DV camera, it was very laggy - it dropped a lot of frames. We've also tried a different camera and the get same problem.

We've looked around, asked people, googled, etc, but we can't figure out how to fix it. Does anybody have any information on the problem that might help? Thanks.

Btw, I've defragged and have plenty of free space (50 gigs)....

P4 3.0 ghz
120 gig hdd
skymaster 1394 firewire
asus p4p800s-x motherboard

Sounds like your RAM is exceptionally low for capturing video. Rule of thumb is to have at least 1 gig to 4 gig of RAM if you wish to do a video capture in premiere. Anything less then that is simply silly.

Of course you didn't list your RAM, so I am only taking a guess, if it does happen to meet at least the 1 gig requirement, then you might want to take a look as see how much other crap is running on the computer at the time. That also makes a huge difference. You need to remember, when you are using video editing software you NEED insane amount of PC specs in order for everything to run correctly. Or... just have nothing on the computer but the video editing software.

    (edit)

Also firewire isn't the greatest for capture video while it is running, neither is USB, if you can use a seperate capture box, and if you actually spent the money on Preimere you should have something like a Dazzle, or Pinnacle capturing box. If not, then you really shouldn't be attempting professional video editing.

Hey mate, that was my mate Tom posting that, it's my computer he is talking about though.

I forgot to mention that it does have 1 gig of ram. It's a new computer too. We've tried capturing with every program shut down, like everything, and still the same result ensues...

The thing that is bugging me is I remember having this problem on a mates computer and I can't remember how we fixed it. It's driving me up the wall!

To Lanfear: Has video editing really become so intensive? I remember back in Premiere 5...a buddy could video capture reliably on his old horrible computer just fine. I used to do heavy video editing on my HORRID PC way back when when Premiere 6 just came out, too.

I don't think you need a lot of computing power to run video editting (unless you want to put in a lot of effects and preview it real time), and capturing would probably need even less. My system is much slower and has a lot less ram, yet I can capture video fine. Of course, I don't have Premiere, so that might make a difference, but somehow I doubt it. Obviously, you do need a certain amount of processing power and transfer rate to but video editting has been accessible long enough that most computers should be able to handle it (as long as you aren't trying anything too complicated).

I suspect that the problem might be with the firewire card or the drivers, but it could also be a cable. Recording video needs a constant amount of data to be transferred, so if there's a connection problem somewhere, you will lose a lot of frames. If you know for sure that these are working ok, than my suggestion is to see if you can capture video on someone else's computer- you know it's probably not the camera so check to make sure it's not your hardware. If it still doesn't work, than it's either a software problem, or a user problem, although I doubt that its either.

Get a Mac, and Final Cut.

Mac + Final Cut > PC + Preimere

But of course, you will need lots of $$$

Forrester... every knows that Macs are far better at creating awesome video editing tools and sound editing tools. There is a reason major motion picture companies work with the Macs instead of the PCs.

Harddrive speed is also a factor with dropped frames. Defragging usually helps, but if you still have a slow harddrive, you'll drop frames. If you get two drives and RAID them, it would be perfect for video capture.

Most of that is subjective. If Apple made an OS that every single person on the planet liked, then I'd see that as the evidence I'm looking for. I'm looking for performance benchmarks on a PC that costs almost exactly the same as a Mac, with all of the best performing parts for the price, versus the current top-of-the-line Mac.
