My very own rantings!
Hey all,
I know this may not be the very place for all the points made in this post but I really don't feel like spreading them over like 5 topics
OK! First and foremost: congratulations to the NS team, amazing stuff! It is refreshing to see that in a time where FPS shooters are mainly dominated by reality shooters and mods, a lot of which WWII based, they manage to come through with an amazing concept.
I have of course already spent many an hour playing it online and I have the following things to say:
* Stop already with the "turrets are too powerful!" things. The team took notice, why dya think in the patch they toned them down A BIT.
A BIT? Yes, A BIT! It is because of this: Alien players tend to go solo too much and one skulk running into a room of rutters is big ugh time.
Take a lerk with ya, a fade and maybe 2 skulks and you can clear the room in NO time. And of a gorge built a defense tower, they dont stand a chance. Just invest TIME, yer not a marine, youre up against technology! The team knew very well what they were doing. Don't change a thing!
* Aliens dont have long range/weak attacks/blablabla.
Weak attacks?!? For Christ's sake, watch an experienced skulk with cloaking, carapace and maybe celerity TEAR through marines..if he's cautious and knows the location of a defense chamber, the marines can be torn through at an insane rate, especially when roaming in packs!
* Packs? Yes! PACKS!
Aliens by themselves can be weak, but thats not the point of the alien. People only work together in marines thanks to a commander. They expect aliens to be solo artists. They're not! 2 or 3 different classes mixed together can cover just about any eventuality! A cloaked fade and skulk waiting while a second skulk lures the unsuspecting marines into the trap..WHOA! Nades or not, THEY GO DOWN! It's about tactics and teamplay.
* Getting stuck in structures.
Oddly, I have a feeling this is not really the NS team's fault as much as it is HL's engine. Maybe through some very intense coding they could arrange for entities shifting upon placement of a structure but my personal guess is, its just a tough luck situation. It's never nice to have to suicide just when ya have all the armor upgrades and a full HMG or when you're a powered up Fade, but don't take it out on the team, I fear it was unavoidable.
* Pings
The pings being so high is unfortunate, but as was stated in many other posts, this is most probably caused by servers messing in the configs and thus altering the balance on which the game was built. The problem is being adressed, it is known, not much else to it. It's a first release, its not like they had zillions in cash, 500 computers, 200 beta/playtesters and all the time in the world because they earn their money through NS. This is a free mod. And as far as I know they do not receive any kind of funding. I, personally, could not be arsed (pardon my french) if people went ballistic on me because I could not realise something or fix something right away. People, remember this is a mod and the makers do not get anything for it...well ok..maybe not entirely true. I bet a good dose of popularity, aknowledgement, compliments and maybe the odd boobieshot gets their way, but still. You can't make a boobie sandwich...well...ok.... maybe you can..BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT!
* Teamplay
I have seen only too much the aliens being really unpopular, it becoming maybe 10 against 6 in a match.
The aliens make a good move (usually backed by my genius self! ) and they start winning ground, QUICKLY.
Hey whats this? 8 on 8 all of a sudden? 10 aliens VS 6 marines? OMG! What hapenned?!?
People always seem to wanna be on the winning side, it saddens me. It's fun having a challenge, having to work for every square inch of territory instead of just walking along, destroying all ya meet. I like the aliens, I like the marines, I can't do commander cuz I suck and I have the utmost admiration for those that take on the challenge. Good work people, teamplay is the way to go!
Heck, I once had to wait like 10min for my Gorge to have 80 res to build a hive and this was at the beginning of the game, without many extra resources. That's teamplay..but maybe its just me. Wiping out another lifeform cannot always be fun & action I guess.
I have ONE suggestion tho for the aliens..
If it could be made possible to choose your spawnhive, it would make things a bite easier when under siege. Maybe it's in there, I have not found it yet *shrug*.
So in closing I would like to say that people should calm down more, enjoy it more.
The game isn't about winning (not really), its about a challenge. Sure it's a b*tch when the marines rip through your defenses with their nade launchers, but thats just the way it is. Enjoy it, the team is still working hard on it, fixing issues/bugs/stray boobies.
My admiration goes out to the team, their hard work and novel ideas.
Well done!

yea. the skulk owns. oh and the only upgrade i had was carapace.
once i got 3 guys at once, they were waiting for orders on bast, and i just charged up the walls!
Anyway, if the patch is as good as is being claimed, my girlfriend will enjoy it.
She was really interested by the aliens and their design.
Wall walking was easy, unlike in AvP, where we both ended up extremely motion sick ehehe.
Low(er) pings will cure our insanity, we tried a game together yesterday but at 500 each, it wasnt nice anymore.
It should be better today, if not, she can go do the dishes or vacuum while i find a server with one slot free
Buffy night tonight, so maybe it'll be a stretch, i'll be sure to post any reactions!
Well, my idea of the aliens, as the dev team described them, was that they would rely less on teamplay and be much more individual than the marines. Instead, when playing, I found out that the aliens actually need teamplay, at LEAST, as much as the marines...
And this rarely occurs on the server I usually play on... but once, and only ONCE, there actually was this INTELLIGENT player on the alien team that didn't go gorge with the rest of the idiots (usually, the alien team concists of 5 gorges and one skulk... guess who!), and supported 2 fades (one was me) with umbra clouds, and we were practically INVINCIBLE! We just tore through the masses of turrets and heavy, HMG marines easy as pie! Then when we had tore our way up to their base, some onoses had appeared and leveled the base to the ground...
I don't think the changes were nesecary, as they will probably unbalance the game for the marines part when more skilled alien players appear... and especially in clan games...
Commander gives you a waypoint, broken turrets and a welder, good luck doing something else because looks like yer screwed
Alien wants to go Gorge? Do it! Alien wants to go Fade? Do it! Alien wants to go Lerk? Do it! But it does NOT mean that the aliens do not have to work together to achieve a goal.
I really do agree with the original idea you get from reading about the aliens is that they can rampange solo. I guess they just meant the fact you make your own choices more
Just *MY* thoughts on this matter though, nobody has to agree
Your right about packs, they are such wonderful creations..
Take care all.
