Serious Question For Mods/admins/everyone

Why are post your desktop threads spam?
This is a serious question that I would like an answer to. Since many others may benifit from the response, I'll post here instead of using a PM.

Why are post your desktop threads spam? I personally enjoy seeing what other people's desktops, as it is interesting to see what people use for work/play much the same it is to see what they look like in real life (see post your pic thread).

I don't see what it hurts so long as people follor the same general rules of the PYP thread.

Same here. I liked the desktop threads and I loved the one that actually got away from the mods for a few days and had a chance to expand, it was cool checking out what other people had on their desktops, etc.

Personally I'd like to see a thread where you post your desktop and a picture of your.. "computer area." Desk, chair, etc, included.

Those threads were always fun, it gave me new themes and desktops for my computer.

Because no one seems to follow those rules... they feel the need to comment and complain or beg for the desktop or post porn or whatever. And after one is locked for cleaning, someone starts another.
And that's irritating, as the mods are human too. If you're asked to watch a door so the room inside can be cleaned, and thirty people try to get around you anyway... you'd get annoyed, and consider roping off the entire area for a good long while.

As such, unless tightly moderated, 'post your...' threads are taboo.

You could always put official rules in a stickied thread, then warn/temp suspend people that don't follow them. It allows those mature enough to follow the rules to enjoy the threads, while in the long run preventing others from ruining them.

As noted, tightly moderated. No one really has the interest... the only reason PYP went on for so long was because Comprox was caring for it.

You cant post your desktop, but you can post in the wrong forums on a completely diffrent subject, and then get in trouble for yelling at the noob

it would be nice if it could be stickied next to PYP with the "posts must have one new image" rule

if you want someone to moderate it .... ^^

I'm totally fine with just looking at my desktop, and I have no desire to share it.

Why not place a link to a screenshot of the desktop in the signature area? That way there's no need for threads.

Well, there's a link in the profile for a pic, does that mean we need no PYP thread?

It puts things together collectivly, so you can see many desktops, and know that others are seeing yours.

    Right.

I can see how PYP isn't a very good comparison. However, a desktop screenshot thread is at least as valid as a "What do you drive?" thread. Personally, I don't look at any of those threads, and I wouldn't contribute to them, but I think it's kind of silly that there can't be a desktop screenshot thread, considering the other threads that exist.

well in the first place it wasn't a community decision to remove it. somebody up there just doesn't like it.

edit: come to think of it, that kinda pisses me off. i wanna see cool Samurize configs and xp themes. >_>

I don't see how discussion is spam, even if the thread drifts off topic. There's a difference between having to moderate a desktop thread for abuses such as crapflooding and\or pr0n and editing it for content to ensure that it keeps to the topic description.
