energy drinks do just about jack and squat (exept make you need to pee).
If I needed to pull an all nighter I would get 2 cans of blueOx (tastes better then red bull) and some bags of chips.

Nononono way.. Red Bull is not the way to go. If you want wings and mother honk'n jet boots strapped to your feet try SoBe No Fear. It tastes like Flintsone's chewable tablets, but it gives you plenty of "energy"
edit: btw after drinking a can of No Fear I had never pee'd so much in one day.. crazy stuff in a can.

blue ox is simply a rip off of red bull. What the deal with the name was I dono <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

When I once spent all night at work, I tried an energy drink, and like most caffeine, it spiked my energy. However, it then caused it to plummet within a few minutes, making me worse than I was before.

Since I work a manual labor job, I can explain Energy Drinks (including Red Bull).
Most energy drinks use the powerful mixture of sugar/caffeine to power the drinker up. The sugar gives you the quick "jolt" and the caffeince keeps it going. I'd say the effects last around 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how many you have. The downside is that when you begin to crash, you really crash. I'm not talking being tired, I'm talking about shaking. It's not fun, and so you drink another.
However, besides the sugar and caffeine, the drinks are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Different drinks are targeted towards different demographics.
Sugarless energy drinks rely more on the natural herbs and vitamins combined with the mighty power of caffeine, and they tend to have less noticable effects, unless you drink 2 or more in one sitting. XS and Sobe Adrenaline Rush are the best of these class of energy drinks directed more towards athletes. A man that ran the whole coast of California was said to say that XS energy drinks helped him on his run because the herbs and vitamins helped his muscles rebuild themselves quicker.
Energy drinks do make a difference. I drink caffinated soda on a consistent basis, and an 8 oz can of Sobe Adrenaline rush (sugar free) gives me a more noticable kick than a 20 oz Dr. Pepper.
As far as taste goes, all of those drinks taste like soda with a more chemical tang to it. Some brands, like XS, have several flavors, including a Green Tea (which is bitter going down, but leaves a very pleasant after taste). Most brans stick with one or two flavors. Red Bull is obviously the most widely known, and therefore gets trashed the most. Having had Red Bulls on several occassions, I have found that it tastes similar to most of the drinks on the market. Almost all of them have that sense of being loaded with extras, which takes getting used to.
Do energy drinks work? Well, certainly they do. Having run off of them on many occasions at work, I can say that they will get you moving, especially if you drink 2 or more at one sitting. Do you need them? It depends on what you do.
I think they're worth the price if it means I can keep working at a much higher pace at work.
While I've never had energy drinks, would anyone care to explain why sugar, coffee, and caffeine in general fail to give me any noticable boost at all? None of them, no matter how much I ingest, give me a boost or jolt.

the most they can do is give you raw energy or keep you from falling asleep.
sugar = energy (nearly as basica s the body can take in) Thus it gives you the ability to do more physical work
Caffine (and thus coffe obviously) simply keeps your body from shutting down (it is a stimulant).
None of them will get you mind funtioning again.
If you simply need a pickme up after a work out, yah, one of them might help. Though I suggest drinks that are designed to replenish ussed vitamins/minerals. I ussed to use one when I was doing martial arts (basicaly it was designed to replenish all the crap you sweat out). Stuff was a powder you mixed with water. Tasted god awful (I tended to make 22oz disapear right fast).
If you wana cram, them none of them are gona help (unless you think ginko, guarine etcetc actualy work, I have never felt anything from em). That is why my all nighter cure consists of snack food (the act of chewing keeps me awake, the fact that I am not gorging my self keeps me from getting sleepy)
