The process is exactly the same for any HL1 Mod, so listen up.
1. Open up Natrual Selection.
2. Click on "Create Server", not "Find Server" like you might be used to.
3. In the options box that comes up, configure the game to your liking. Make sure you name the game something suitable, like "Curve's NS Server"
4. Click "Ok"
5. Wait for the listen server pack to load in
6. Tell your fellow Lan'ners that youve made a server, called "Curve's NS Server"
7. Idle in the Ready Room, until there's enough people on.
8. Play the game as normal.
The above guide assumes a few things.
1. You don't have a spare PC to host a Dedicated server.
2. You want to set the server up on your kick-**** rig, that can handle a billion and one TFLOPS at once, but you want to play along as well.
3. You have a rudimentary knowledge of how to configure a Half--Life 1 MOD server (which isn't hard really. Just choose the options you want...)
4. You know basic console commands. (Things like changelevel, and sv_restart for those lame games, etc)
I think that covers everything on how to make an NS Listen server (One you can play on as well, from the same PC)
Thank you ladies and gentlemen, I'll be here for a while...
WonID is the only alternative, and there's no really stable way to play NS3 on it.
Anyway, here goes.
Install Ns3 as normal to steam HLserver
Install WonID HLserver (There's probably a download somewhere)
Copy the "ns" folder from the steam install to the wonid install
Run the Hlserver as you would any wonid based install.
This pressumes you know a fair bit about HLserver setup etc, but feel free to re-post if you want more info.
Alternatively, there's Google. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Ah yeah, all clients will need WonID hl installed too, not SteamHL. (Well, yeah, pretty obvious, but hey.)
Good luck! NS on LAN rox.
It can be done, but is unsupported, and is mainly unpredictable, and the only people who can help you is the people who have done it before.
But then again, non-Steam NS is highly unlikely to melt your CPU...
Ive got to get them playing NS but they are terrified of steam lol
Can anyone help me ?
I am getting the steam message on the clients " can not contact steam validation server".
Man sure it can't contact it.. it's a LAN game !
Anyone know how to fix this bug ?
<!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> thx I test it later !
NS on LAN (Non-Steam)
Make sure everyone has got Half-Life 1 installed, and is on it's final update v.1.1.0.0.
Install NS as normal. Note, that If you haven't got Steam installed, the NS installer probes the registry and will find HL1 installed to c:\Sierra\Half-Life.
When NS finishes its install, right-click on the desktop, and make a new shortcut "(RC)->New->Shortcut".
Make the shortcut read as thus "C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe" -console -game ns
Double click on the shortcut to start NS, but with distincly WON HL flavour displayed.
Set up the LAN server as normal (If you can remember how to set up the server)
For those who can't remember, click Multiplayer, then LAN Games, the Create Server.
Setting up the WON NS server is a bit different to the normal WON HL server, being that you need to click on "Advanced Options" then check "LAN Game", and make sure the "Steam Server Location" is set to "255 - World"
Click OK, then Create.
Wait for the server to finish loading, then press Escape, then "Resume Game" (This counteracts the old console bug in WON-HL)
Get everyone to join, then away you go.
*Points to screen* Hey look! It's NS, but without Steam!!!
i think youve got no chance to run a lan server in steam without contact to the internet ... because valve wants to check if everybody really bougth their games ...
so I need an internet access to play a LAN game <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->?? WTH.
And why is there the option " LAN GAME " ? ... grml.
I just don't check it...
But I think I read somewhere that you can setup an CS LAN Server with steam.. should be the same. I'm going to search some more hours in the net...
The Steam system needs to connect to the internet *once* to verify that you have a valid CD-key bound to the account that you want to connect with. Once it has done the single connection, it is widely known that you can start Steam in Offline Mode, which will bypass the update check, and verification stage, and allow you to play your games without connecting to the internet. To do this, all you need to do is start Steam up when you aren't connected to the internet, and tell the resulting box "Start In Offline Mode".
This will put Steam into offline mode, where it won't attempt to check the servers for updates. Bear in mind that you won't be able to play online games, or register new games to your account.
I do this everytime I go to a local LAN event, as you can never be sure if they've got an internet connection. Also, I do this whenever I want to play HL2. I just can't be bothered with stopping my game to tell the nVidia Firewall that the attempted connection is not allowed...
Also, the option for "LAN Game" is there to tell Steam that the game is for a LAN-only, and not for t'Internet. If you don't check that box, then people from t'Internet can connect and play on your supposedly LAN-only server.
I am in OFFLINE-MODE.
Then I open a Game Server -> NS 3.0.
(Start NS --> Create Server )
Then a second PC tries to connect to my LAN GAME trough 100 Mbit crosscabel.
The second PC is also in OFFLINE MODUS.
Then the second PC can't connect and gets a message that the steam validation server isn't available.
so thats the prob.
Simple things coming up...
Can the other PC join any other NS servers, with you connected to a different one (this needs online mode)
Are you using the same Steam account to play on both PC's?
yes i can play online....DoD, NS, CS, ...
no it is not the same key or account or anything cracked or hacked or cheated...
Sorry I*m getting really .... *annoyed* <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I have been trying for 2 hours to create an Account at steampowered.de to ask my question.. but those ******* even aren't able to get the Forum working in the right way.
.. ey btw. i think thats it... i tried the whole shitt yesterday wit a friend and we CAN play DoD over LAN ..
-> the only difference is that DoD is Valve/steam supportet and therefore it was running with the dedicated server tool.
Download it, then try connecting to the PC with your other system. You both won't be able to play, as it's a DS that is being made, but it will sort out the problem, if it's due to the listen server pack.
Also, try making the listen server on the other PC, and try connecting to it from your system.
thx to all of you.
amxx is also running fine. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Just a last problem... my server isn't shown in the server list under "LAN".
"There are no LAN server available" or sth else.
But if I connect through the console with the server IP it works fine. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
