I have a dark monitor, in the 1.xx days I would always get advanced hivesight so I could actually see the marines.
Now that it's implemented for free it's awesome.
Everyone gets an NS "calibration card" as part of the map design whatevers.
Each mapper calibrates his monitor/card to match said example.
He makes his map, and submits it to NS.
Then all the NS players, who have calibrated their monitors, can enjoy NS the way it is intended to be.
You know, like Resident Evil games for instance?
That way the people playing NS for an atmospheric game of coordinated teamplay can enjoy their game to the fullest. The rest...... the rest can crank their gamma up so they don't get a negative K:D

NONE OF THOSE HIGH GAMMA CHEATERS EVER USE TEAMPLAY.
I don't see how derailing a thread relates to discussing a calibration card.
I mean as it stands the only people really making huge use of the new flashlight are those with dark monitors or who are running with gamma low enough to have dark corners.
If you've your gamma set so that, say, the corridor in Hera is bright white, then you're not going to get any use out of alien flashlight.. in fact it might be more of a liability.
Seriously. If the flashlight hurts your eyes your gamma is too high. I have my gamma just above the recommended settings (as per the calibration card) and I don't find the alien flashlight even remotely eyebleeding. If you have FPS issues I can understand that, but dark corners are made dark by mappers for a reason, if you can see skulks ok in the light you can see enough, stop exploiting the game's gamma.
He has a point, I see alotv people with HIGH cranked gamma so they can see cloaks 'n such. Its one thing to have a crappy card, its kinda **** when you crank your gamma 1000% then totally defend it saying "Oh, i only do it cuz i like it".
This is the setting for the image on the right.
Each line represents a step of 0.2. Brightness goes from 0 to 2. Gamma goes from 1 to 3. I believe the default settings are a Brightness of 1 and a Gamma of 2 (the middle image).

The only reason I ever intentionally turn the flashlight off is to see weather an object is cloaked or not.
IMHO I think the dev team should just bite the bullet and impliment the flashlight as the aliens primary viewtype. [edit] and sandstorm, the last image is what the eclipse ready room is supposed to look like. You can gamma it up alot brighter then that though, trust me.
All of you are assuming that those three screenshots appear the same to everyone viewing them on the forum. There are enough places to change brightness outside of Half-Life that I'm sure this isn't true, making the comparison useless.
I mean fair enough its good for dark monitors, and I have my stuff set low-ish, but at the same time I sparingly use fl.
I wonder if they could put in a switch or something so that people could play with "flashlight default on"... you know like run/walk. That keeps both camps happy.
I use the flashlight. It helps tremendously. My monitor is, shall we say, not good... and the only way to gamma up NS enough to see 3 feet in front of me is to wash the screen in such a gray hue that unless I am in NS, my screen looks like crap. So most of the time I'm half-blind (which I actually enjoy, it makes the game spooky).
With the alien flashlight, dark combat is only dangerous for marines. This is exceptionally bad on some of the darker maps (most of co_angst is pitch black). If the devs could improve the marine's flashlight (remove the christmas tree effect, make the radius much larger) I think it'd be an almost perfect play experience for me.

I love the alien flashlight. I think I'm the only one that thinks this but on most of the maps the marines practiacally have camoflauge on. Helps a lot.
You guys are crazy, why would we make this feature default, or mandatory?
If they want to improve the game, they have to make it so that when you turn it on, it doesn't turn off unless you hit the flashlight key again. So when you die, and you like the flashlight, you don't have to hit it again, and if you don't like it, you never have to hit the flashlight key. Solves everybody's problem.
if your an alien with flashlight on can the marines see that you have the flashlight on? like is there some way of identifying that it is on just as you can when a marine does by seeing a glow around them?

IMHO Sandstorm, the far right is the one that seems correct to me.
