Usb Hdd Freaks Me Out

<div class="IPBDescription">on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off/on/of</div> Hi, I've got a usb2.0 USB HDD case (with a HDD inside yes) and at irregular intervals it is going on and off, not the case itself, but windows thinks it does, *ding off* *ding on*.
While doing this it looks for files to autorun, slowing my PC down a lot, and it asks me what to open.

What could cause this? Is there a hidden registry value that I can change to make the autostarting stop? Or is my PSU too weak? Might something be overheating?

Help I seek.

Go into the properties for the device and uncheck the "Allow Windows to Save Power by turning this Device off" (or whatever the field is called). It sounds like that is what is causing your consternation.

Another thing you can try: what kind of drive are you running in there? I know that with my Western Digital I had to run it without a jumper (single mode) in the back otherwise it would go nuts if I tried to run it as slave or master or whatever.
