<div class="IPBDescription">Little help?</div> Hey guys I thought this was the best place to come for some advice and help. I'd like to install a version of Linux, although I need to partition my hard drive. FDISK as far as I know erases all data when partitioning a drive. I was wondering if there are any programs out there that will possibly partition the drive so I keep all present data and will allow me to install and use a Linux operating system?

Thanks in advance.

    <a href='http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/</a>

    Maybe you can find a live CD with QtParted installed on it. Not sure if knoppix comes with it or not.

    I suggest you just rid yourself of those nasty NTFS partitions though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    :edit: apparently Knoppix does come with it.

    :2nd edit: Click the sig for the best distro I have used to date.

    I concur. Partition Magic is terrific for resizing a partition w/o losing your existing data. You can just resize the partition you have now to be 10gb or so less, and hten install linux. the linux installer will do the rest, and (at least for redhat/fedora core) is smart enough not to bork your windows partition.

    And it costs $$ <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    $70 IIRC.

    QtParted is free

    That's what I said. So, yes, it does.

    I seem to remember the Fedora Core installer offering to partition the disk itself when I installed it.

    No, you said to get rid of it... Which made me think this would simply get rid of them. :P

    PartitonMagic is what I use (and I have a legal license for it ^_^)... beyond that, check out gtparted. Never used it myself, so PM is the only one I can say for certain will work.

    On the topic of Linux distros, I'd recommend Sorcerer. Where Gentoo grabbed the idea for emerge... Sorcerer's 'cast' function. You DO need more know-how to run Sorc, but it pays off in the end in a major way on the performance side. Gentoo always struck me as.. well... sloppy. Even moreso with that new Ubuntu crap from Mandrake (ugh).

    I intend on starting out with Mandrake because of it's popularity and simplicity and learning from there, I also assume as its simple it will not bork my partition. Thanks again guys.

    Well, if you are using Mandrake, it's installer automatically will resize your NTFS partitions <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
