<div class="IPBDescription">Mapping concept question.</div>I want to start a new NS map, but I have a few questions before I start:

1)  What sort of environment would be best?  I like these:

   -Abandoned Factory
   -Space Installation

   Which of those is better?

2)  How am I going to test all of the effects, if the Mapper's Build (so I gathered) is unplayable.  Is it COMPLETELY unplayable, or just not playable over the internet.  I guess I mean, How do I TEST my maps with the full effects I wish to have in it?

You may run around your map and look at the supacool particles and fog but you can't accually PLAY ns.
    yet................
I know it's a drag but atleast you can pretend there are aliens and marines killing eachother. That's what I do.

    1) Hmm, I think both are very cool, but I would vote Abandoned Factory as it'll probably be the more orignal of the two. I guess other mappers are going to make space installation. But as I said, both are cool environments.

    2) It is very playable, but it's just without all the alien classes and marine weapons. You can walk around your maps and see all the particle effects and stuff, and you can use the commanders mode too. When they said it was unplayable, they meant that you couldn't play against other people.

Hope I could be of some help. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome Archonius.  You can walk around in your level, set up triggers to fire off your effects, you just don't get any in-game gizmos/aliens in the NSTR.

As far a themes go, either as long as it's a sci-fi factory.

Hmm... Kassigner seems to have answerd at the same time...

Before you set your map in a warehouse, think about this:  Why would the marines need or want to siege control of a warehouse?  It better be something really necessary or there's no reason to go there.  So a delapidated warehouse, while it may be cool, doesn't fit too much with NS if there isn't any reasoning behind it.  Then again, spaceships and bases are way too overused, so maybe a warehouse would be nice.

Still, if it becomes an excuse to have 500 crates in it, I'll kill you.

    Who said it had to be a warehouse? <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

An abandoned factory could have some strategic value to it if...well you could probably figure something out. Like it might be close to some important city (though maybe not that likely).

    Why not?
What about the people who worked and lived there? You know sort of like in the second alien movie when they get a mayday signal from a colony.

    *insert creeepy music here*
And when the marines arrive there's not a soul to be seen, only blood. And gore. And a new family of colonizers...

Maybe its not about the warehouse... maybe the aliens came into the warehouse/factory with a crate, and decided to hive there (they have no strategic intelligence)... Now they are discovered/expanding, and the NSA has to go in to clean it, because you can't just keep an alien infestation on your planet...

I think what he meant was in the case of a reletively worthless factory they wouldn't send in valuable marines.  They would just blast the place out of existence with artilery or somesuch.
