Really? If you'd been talking about something like diablo I'd have agreed; because all the stuff in diablo pretty much fights the same
In PSO though everything was pretty different; delsabers leaping across the room requiring you to dodge out the way then blocking all attacks from the front so you had to try and get the thingss to attack so they'd leave themselves open, canadines that you had to shoot with a gun to bring down into melee range, rag rappies that play dead waiting for you to turn your back so they can escape, indi belras that fired a machine gun attack you could only really avoid by standing perfectly still, etc. Most online roleplay/hacknslash games don't have anywhere NEAR that variety :o Not even close!
Um... kinda confused a bit about the last line in your post but if you meant "can't" instead of "can" then it sounds like PSU is veeeery close to what you're after :3
Though they give a pretty depressing description of the singleplayer, I'm definitely going to get this simply because it can't get any worse than the NES games, and since you rave on and on about PSO :X
EDIT: I hope to GOD that essentially that whole movie was either made out of cutscenes or completely engineered, because otherwise my computer is going to cry out and explode of awesomeness. Though it's admittedly rather cheesy.

Oh I dunno, I got some pretty neat stuff from rappies; specially the rare ones ^^
I enjoyed the canandine clusters with the red one in the middle; you could take the red out and have the whole lot go kamikaze on you or run in and blast the whole lot with rabarta till the normals exploded (red had high ice resist so it'd survive) and lots of other stuff... then again I was a FOnewearl so using magic didn't bother me much :3
Only thing I found grantz good for was killing dark belras... lots of hp normally but 2 grants knocked them down pretty quick :p
I still have nightmares of being chased by gilchics and sinowbeats; the gilchics only because of that annoying laser attack half would do while the other half were keeping you occupied XD
sorry to bump this again but I sorta pinched EGM off a friend and did a bit of reading :p
In addition to all the stuff I mentioned I found out one or two more tidbits to make my sleep even uneasier as I bubble with excitement...
- PSU will have weekly injections of new quests and sega promise that they will all be rather more epic in scale than the old PSO ones. Don't know about you guys but I've never seen any game with weekly updates. I doubt this is an empty promise either as they weren't really all that slow with adding new quality stuff to PSO.
- More details on partner robots; the replacements for mags! They don't pump up your stats, HOWEVER you can customise them by feeding them different items (ala mags) and buying them new parts (o.O). They also supposedly handle crucial item-management functions for you (though these weren't specified unfortunately) and if you have empty slots on a mission your can use your robo-friends to fill them as AI helpers!!! :o
- The single player campaign is quite simply massive. The story, characters and environments are easily on scale with ye old Phantasy Star games (non-online) and reminiscent of the epic tales of Final Fantasy. There's cutscenes, voice acting and the environment even changes as 'seed' corrupt and twist the worlds they invade! The main character gets his own apartment that you can customise up with all kinds of fun stuff like in animal crossing. This carries over a little to the online where you can create and sell unique items to other players online :o
- I think I mentioned this before but to clarify; the online and offline are almost two completely different games. While they have the same battle system and controls and whatnot the single player is a worthy game on it's own this time rather than something to do to open up levels, while the online game is a massively pumped up and hyper-fied version of the game ye olde PSO addicts lovingly remember ^^
- A small design note is that the team went back and looked at the old Phantasy Star Games on master system / megadrive (genesis) and they've based the 3 new worlds off the ones in the old games including the bad guys, environments and even the races so that it's truer to it's roots than PSO was (though it still takes all the coolness fromt here too :3 ). No doubt fans of the classis will love that and from looking at the screenies of the human planet I'm definitely not complaining :p
Sweeeeet. I played PSO on PC and Dreamcast back when but this is gonna be 10X better. 40+ hours of linear story/quest mode isn't all the bad, but they'll need to do something to make it fresh and exciting.
I played my friend's Gamecube copy of PSO... I found the combat incredibly dull, and the three hit combo annoying, especially since there were way too many bad guys in the first rooms o.O (He was something like level 60 or whatever, though, so maybe they dropped in some extra to make it harder for him). Also, I didn't really like the 30 FPS rate it had there... I'm so used to playing sharper-looking 60 fps games (DoA 2, MvC 2, SCII, Viewtiful Joe, blah blah blah blah) that going back down to 30 FPS is sort of a drag. I mean, I don't know about the GC port, but the PS2 port of Splinter Cell managed 60fps from what I understand... Surely this game isn't as graphically complex?
I'll note that I probably didn't know all the controls and attack strategies, and I got quickly fed up with the slow pace of it (quit after 15 or so minutes), and the entire time I played was in splitscreen mode. Also, a new hit limit of 6, with the possibility to break that limit and/or execute different combos sounds like fun... I mean, the hit detection was real time, but entering the combos felt rediculously static and dull... The same one... Every time... x.x; Also, sidestepping sounds good... I'll keep my eye on it, but it definentley feelt slightly less than exciting to start playing, especially compared to FFVII/Chrono Trigger/A Link to the Past/what have you.
Also, they better make the energy swords look cool
well, for a start the original PSO absolutely MUST be played at 60Hz. It feels about 30 times slower at 50Hz to the point it's like playing in treacle.
There's always tons of monsters though, even right from the start you usually fight them at minimum in waves of 3. I don't envy anyone getting thrown on a level 60 char if they've never played before, especially if you get chucked into ultimate ruins XD
Even the hardest to kill tanks only take about 8-10 hits in there at max, my poor lil FOnewearl (who kicked extraordinary amounts of bee-hind) could be one-shotted if I ever slipped up and the enemy hit her
The 3 Hit combo thingy is what you make of it really. You don't absolutely have to do all 3 and sometimes you're best not if you don't want a good smack in the chops from the baddies. If you had one of the rare few weaps with a special worth using it was fun to mix it all up with fast, hard and special attacks. The stupidly low accuracy on special attacks meant you usually had to use the 3rd hit in a combo to really use them as each swing is more accurate than the last... as a result I'd often round the baddies up and get some distance before winding up a nice berserker hit they'd walk into on my 3rd swipe (beserk drains your hp to basically quadruaple your damage... usually left me near dead but hey... I can heal and the monsters usually can't, though I'd have to time it right so I could run/heal before the nasties got to me ).
One of the things I always liked about PSO I think will be even more prominent in PSU considering the changes is that you can tell the difference between a level 200 who actually played those levels and someone who's borrowing their friend's level 200 character... the latter being the one who wouldn't survive past the first 5 rooms and gets outdone by the level 100 that knows what they're doing ^^;

Hallelujah for owning one. There might be issues with getting an internet connection, but it sure as hell is better than nothing!
Many <3 for PSO. Fun until you hit S rank (final boss was cheap with that 1 hit KO move =X)
