You sure this isn't a scam lol?
I think this is a scam.
Anyway, your questions are all answered by the <a href='http://www.ciao.co.uk/faq.php/Id/2/Idx/6/Idy/1' target='_blank'>terms and conditions</a>. In particular:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->7. Participation in the Bonus Programme
You may only participate in ciao.com's Bonus Programme if you are a member of ciao.com, <b>resident in the UK and have a UK bank account</b>. Ciao.com reserves the right to expel any individual who tries to register for the Bonus Programme more than once under multiple names, and ciao.com further reserves the right to withdraw any credit entitlement such individual may have. <b>Ciao.com will make payments of £5 or more from your ciao account. Due to the high administrative costs, ciao.com is unable to transfer balances of less than £5 from your ciao account.</b><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You do have to be a UK resident. Also, one has to wonder exactly <i>how many</i> surveys you have to take to acrue £5.
[edit]whoops! this space temporarily left blank while I read the <a href='http://www.ciao.co.uk/faq.php/Id/2/Idx/6/Idy/2' target='_blank'>data protection policy</a>![/edit]
[edit again]Their data protection policy is actually quite reasonable, considering that they are in the business of market research... although this part is a spam loophole\minefield:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->3 Who gathers information?
If you find yourself on a Ciao.com page and are asked for personal information, you share this information exclusively with Ciao.com if no other explicit instructions are given. Products or services which are found at Ciao.com can be sponsored by other companies or by Ciao.com and other companies together. Some or all of the collected data from these products or services is handed on to the sponsor if necessary. If data is not taken by or is not exclusively used by Ciao.com, we will inform you before the gathering of the data. You can then decide to not participate in these products or services if you do not want to give your data to a third party.
Ciao uses ad servers to serve the advertisements on our pages. These partners may use cookies in the process of serving advertisements but will not collect any identifying personal information about you.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So... <i>sometimes</i> your data will be given to other companies (and obviously those other companies could be spammers or have lax data protection policies enabling your details to go wandering) but supposedly only if you were made aware that you are giving your data to a third party. That means you'd need to be on your toes constantly to make sure that your data is only going to Ciao. It also doesn't necessarily mean that you won't <i>have</i> to provide these details in order to participate in stuff, and if that stuff is the only stuff available to review (or whatever) then you can't earn any money without exposing your details (or, at the very least, having to navigate another data protection policy).
Oh, and they acknowledge that their adservers may drop data mining cookies on you. Since you've already agreed to willingly participate in market research, however, this shouldn't be an issue.[/edit again]
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->5. Content
Our internet services provide a forum for user-generated contents. As a user, you acknowledge that all opinions, reports of experiences, announcements, pieces of advice, texts, pictures (including pictures linked or otherwise connected via a URL) and other content ("the Content") which are found within the WebPages are solely the responsibility of the person(s) or institutions, which transmitted the Content to ciao.com for reproduction. You acknowledge that ciao.com cannot check the Content and accordingly ciao.com accepts no liability whatsoever for all or part of the Content. As a precondition for the transmission of Content to ciao.com you warrant and represent that: a) you are the holder of all rights of the transmitted Content or you have acquired the necessary rights of the holder to transmit or reproduce the Content to ciao.com. b) the use of such Content by ciao.com represents no violation of copyright or other rights of a third party.
<b>You automatically guarantee ciao.com all rights to copy, distribute, send, publicly reproduce, publish, further develop, sell or otherwise use of the transmitted Content world-wide without any claim for reimbursement by you or a third party, and these rights shall continue even after termination of this agreement</b>. You also acknowledge that ciao.com has the unlimited right (but in no case obligation)to reject or exclude from the account the whole or parts of the transmitted Content where ciao.com deems such action to be necessary. <b>You acknowledge that ciao.com may delete your ciao account if no new Content has been transmitted to ciao.com in a consecutive six month period</b>.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If I'm not mistaken, they are under NO obligation to pay you, as you have given them the right to "<b>otherwise use</b>" content you have transmitted to them (that is, the reviews you're supposedly getting paid for) "<b>without any claim for reimbursement by you or a third party</b>". Oh, I'm sure they do credit accounts, but depending on the interpretation of this paragraph <i>they do not have to if they don't want to</i>.
Read, and make your own decision. I'd stay the hell away from it, myself.
