Looking For Video Advice

<div class="IPBDescription">making a site</div> I've made a small site to just post videos of me and my friends doing stupid stuff... The thing is, most of the people I know have no knowledge of Xvid or anything else like that.

Simply, does anyone have any advice as to a decent codec that can be watched by default on many machines? Xvid is just too specialized, i guess.

    It all depends on what converter you are using. Any of the basic divx codecs work great on just about anyones machine who actually watches videos on their computer.     Short answer: no.

    By default windows machines ship with some very old codecs... Indeo, MSVideo etc... they don't compress very well, and have limitations on video size and quality.

    It'd be easier just to find a nice installer for one of the newer MPEG 4 codecs - Xvid, Divx etc.

    You guys didn't read his post. Divx is just as specialized as xvid..

    I suggest WMV unless they're using linux/mac.

    Actually it is a nice format and I know Premiere supports it.. I'm not sure what else though, other then Final Cut.

    Hmmm... yes, most peopel do have quicktime. And the movies come out of the camera in a .mov format.

    Do you have any tools that do .mov->.mov transcodes to reduce size?

    Well, i'm not making any huge full length movies. Just short clips of stupdi stuff with simple cuts. I don't need anything more complex than virtualdub. Just something to cut, resize and recompress.

    Either that or quicktime.

    Quicktime is on most windows computers, and all macs. I use mplayer to play quicktime in Linux. I also use it to play WMV's too, which work on all windows machines and macs with wmp installed.
