Svchost Problem... Grrrss

<div class="IPBDescription">I need j00r 1337 skillz</div> My laptop is so messed up, it has svchost running - taking up 100% CPU power... and of course I can't get rid of it (end the process) because then Windows restarts but right before it restarts it opens everything, so I know svchost is the problem. What should I do?? I need j00r 1337z0rz skillz!!

It's just one of your windows services - run services.msc and see whats running. Some like RPC are required by windows to function, others can be stopped safely to find which one is causing it - when you've found it, set it to manual in it's properties and reboot.

List of services <a href='http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm' target='_blank'>here</a> - don't stop any that are listed as Automatic under the barebones config.

is your laptop fitted with xp home edition? i got 2 pals that has recently bought laptops, and home edition really screws up with updates and such, and made their comps slower. both of them has xp pro installd now, and no problems anymore.

There's some virus I forget the name of that is called svchost, which is of course problematic because there are 3 svchosts that are real, needed windows system processes.

Boot to safe mode w/ networking, and then run a <a href='http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp' target='_blank'>virus scan</a>.

I had this problem when reinstalling Win2k on someones PC. As well as getting a load of virii from god knows where after the first time i connected to the internet. Svchost steadily kept using more and more processing power until it crashed the PC.
Despite virus scanning and removing the viruses they kept coming back. Basicly the problem was an security hole in unpatched windows 2000 that allows the viruses to keep reappearing and it seems as part of this, svchost service RPC gets damaged and keeps trying to restart without clearing the last process.
Turns out it was a know problem and i needed to use windows update to install a bunch of security fixes for it.
Of course the problem is the svchost slows then locks up the pc before it can finish.
The solution I found was to Start windows update, open the task manager, Set Taskmanager.exe, explorer.exe, Iexplorer.exe and the programmes that do the windows update install etc. to high cpu priority. That way they'll be able to finish. Note you'll need to keep giving high priority to the windows update installers as they keep opening and closing after installing one part. But eventually it will get done and should work fine.
Assuming you have the same problem I did anyway. But definately run windows update.

I had that too. Check your processes for "mslove.exe". I just took it out of the boot and compie been working for 3 years perfectly since.
