Flying Books

I'm going on a long trip very soon. This would be fine, except this long trip involves more than a day in flight so I really need something to keep me entertained. I'm thinking of bringing a few good books along. Does anyone have any good suggestions on what to bring? It would be good if the books were light physically and mentally. I'm going to be on an airplane and they aren't the quietest things in the world. Also I need to carry this book or books in my backpack for two weeks so it would be nice if they were compact.

I was thinking of something like a Terry Pratchett book to keep me entertained. Dune, Hitchhikers guide and Enders Game are all out of the question because I've read them to many times. Also please try to refrain from posting lists. That would just turn this into a spam thread.

The Dark Tower series, starting with The Gunslinger. If you like fantasy/post apocalyptic world stuff, then this will be a fun fun read. I'll leave it to others to go into more detail since there are a ton more Dark Tower fans on these boards.

I'd have to say Love Hina, Trigun, To Kill a Mockingbird, or probably one of the Starcraft books.

TKaM is a very good book to read. I recommend it, definitely. Too bad I don't own it, or I'd read it again. Poor Boo.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, if you haven't read it. Which you should have.

You actually read the incredible boringness that is Dune?

Anyways, I heard The Book of the New Sun is good.

The compact, soft-cover (rather old) Michael Chrichton books, like Jurassic Park, the Lost World (far better than that second movie, bit like the third), Andromeda Strain or Timeline (my favorite - but breaks out the unnecessary science in the beginning). I once was able to tell you the general plot of any place in the book if you read any single sentence...but that was in like 5th grade (I would shy away from Prey, since it's too..."mwhaha, this will be made into a movie..."-ly wrtten.

Not sure I'm familiar with many other books...you could go old school with R.L. Stine (Stein? ) or something. The Relic is a pretty good book too, has one of my favorite descriptive moments in any book.

America the Book (although I've only skimmed through parts) seems to be entertaining, although that only comes in hard-cover right now...so you'd probably want to pass.

Otherwise...bring a sketchpad or do lots of sleeping or something.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Now there's a set of novels that will make you think.

Btw, weren't there a few Doom novels released in the past? I haven't read much sci-fi that you already have, and I assume you read the entire Ender/Hitchhicker's series

Really you've got enough books already mentioned since it only takes a few to last a while, but I'd like to recommend Rainbow 6. It's not so great but it's really dang long and it's fun to read about an airplane being hijacked while you're flying. You start glancing around and looking paranoid and stuff.

Along that vein, any of the Tom Clancy books are interesting reads, imo. The Bear and the Dragon is great.

The Dark Tower series, Stephen King. Possibly the greatest story ever told.

I found Tom Clancy books to be rather slow. Good, but slow. I found a book called 'No matter how loud I shout', tells some storys of some kids in the justice system and what they did wrong. I thought it would suck when I picked it up, but the storys are rather interesting

One of the storys includes a teenager who worked at baskin robbins, and after work he hid in his bosses car. Him and his wife got off work and he blew his bosses head off, then reloaded and killed his wife while she was busy screaming. Rather violent XD

Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card are very good books.

I also enjoy Les Miserables, but you better be flying roundtrip to New Zealand.

The first and third halo books are good (the second sucks).

Harry Harrison is my favourite sci-fi author (beaten only by ender's game). His better stuff includes the deathworld trilogy, the stainless steel rat series (thats a comedy) and the eden trilogy.

You could always start reading the wheel of time series; good fantasy and a tad different from the usual LOTR inspired fare; the characters are fairly good and the world is interesting to read about... be warned the first book starts a bit slow but when it finally gets going it goes with a bang! Great stuff ^^

Michael moorcock's eternal champions series isn't too bad either. Hawkmoon was pretty good so I'd recommend that; once again there's some good characters in it and some of the world it's based in is rather surreal to say the least :3

edit: to be different and recommend some horror try reading the 'rats' trilogy by james herbert! Rats, lair and domain are all a good read with the 3rd being the outright best. Nuclear hallocausts, giant man-eating rats and a world turned hostile in the attempts to survive in the ruins of the city; gets really atmospheric at points so be warned XD

    Heh.

*looks at the bookcases on his wall*

    To keep it short though:

Sci-Fi: Anything David Weber, especially the Harrignton series.

    Fantasy: Anything Mercedes Lackey.

Both of these authors are quite prolific and have several books out in paperback.

Arthur C Clarke - Any of the RAMA series. Although the first two are really the ones you'll want to start with.

John Wyndham - Day Of The Triffids One of the best books in the world ever. Plus the first sentence kicks butt.

    Oh and

Max Brooks - The Zombie Survival Guide. Because it kicks ****!

Well, I can recommend you Operation Rainbow from Tom Clancy (Rainbow 6) but it was mentioned already, but The Sum of all fears is good too.
A book I can really recommend you is Pilot Pirx from Satinslaw Lem. This is a sci-fi book, very very good.
I can also recommend you the books of Boris and Arkadi Strugatzki. I read one of the books in a plane myself .
But I have to warn you, this books have good stories, like Roadside Picnic, but the books are VERY philosophical, most of the people don´t even understand them (not only children, adults aswell), but as I mentioned before, very good stories, very good science fiction books.
