I'm going on a long trip very soon. This would be fine, except this long trip involves more than a day in flight so I really need something to keep me entertained. I'm thinking of bringing a few good books along. Does anyone have any good suggestions on what to bring? It would be good if the books were light physically and mentally. I'm going to be on an airplane and they aren't the quietest things in the world. Also I need to carry this book or books in my backpack for two weeks so it would be nice if they were compact.
I was thinking of something like a Terry Pratchett book to keep me entertained. Dune, Hitchhikers guide and Enders Game are all out of the question because I've read them to many times. Also please try to refrain from posting lists. That would just turn this into a spam thread.

TKaM is a very good book to read. I recommend it, definitely. Too bad I don't own it, or I'd read it again. Poor Boo.
You actually read the incredible boringness that is Dune?
Anyways, I heard The Book of the New Sun is good.

Not sure I'm familiar with many other books...you could go old school with R.L. Stine (Stein? ) or something. The Relic is a pretty good book too, has one of my favorite descriptive moments in any book.
America the Book (although I've only skimmed through parts) seems to be entertaining, although that only comes in hard-cover right now...so you'd probably want to pass.
Otherwise...bring a sketchpad or do lots of sleeping or something.

I am an idiot. However, I can use quote tags.

Btw, weren't there a few Doom novels released in the past? I haven't read much sci-fi that you already have, and I assume you read the entire Ender/Hitchhicker's series
Can't beat the original.
tom clancy is always good, not at all difficult but enjoyable, also the icewind dale series of books ( RA Salvatore) starring drittz DoUrden, are really quite good, some of my favorite books, also easy to read
At least something as good as the Flying Lawnmower thread, huh?
One of the storys includes a teenager who worked at baskin robbins, and after work he hid in his bosses car. Him and his wife got off work and he blew his bosses head off, then reloaded and killed his wife while she was busy screaming. Rather violent XD
I also enjoy Les Miserables, but you better be flying roundtrip to New Zealand.
Strait up, dawg.
Harry Harrison is my favourite sci-fi author (beaten only by ender's game). His better stuff includes the deathworld trilogy, the stainless steel rat series (thats a comedy) and the eden trilogy.
Michael moorcock's eternal champions series isn't too bad either. Hawkmoon was pretty good so I'd recommend that; once again there's some good characters in it and some of the world it's based in is rather surreal to say the least :3
edit: to be different and recommend some horror try reading the 'rats' trilogy by james herbert! Rats, lair and domain are all a good read with the 3rd being the outright best. Nuclear hallocausts, giant man-eating rats and a world turned hostile in the attempts to survive in the ruins of the city; gets really atmospheric at points so be warned XD
*looks at the bookcases on his wall*
To keep it short though:
Sci-Fi: Anything David Weber, especially the Harrignton series.
Fantasy: Anything Mercedes Lackey.
Both of these authors are quite prolific and have several books out in paperback.
Diazo
John Wyndham - Day Of The Triffids One of the best books in the world ever. Plus the first sentence kicks butt.
Oh and
Max Brooks - The Zombie Survival Guide. Because it kicks ****!
And anything made by Peter Hamilton.
A book I can really recommend you is Pilot Pirx from Satinslaw Lem. This is a sci-fi book, very very good.
I can also recommend you the books of Boris and Arkadi Strugatzki. I read one of the books in a plane myself .
But I have to warn you, this books have good stories, like Roadside Picnic, but the books are VERY philosophical, most of the people don´t even understand them (not only children, adults aswell), but as I mentioned before, very good stories, very good science fiction books.
