Prey! It's Back!

Of all places, CNN Money breaks the news that this year's E3 will feature the resurfacing of Prey, this time under the DOOM 3 engine.

If you don't remember or perhaps have never even heard of Prey, don't feel bad. It's been in development since some of you were toddlers. In short, its the game that out-Duke-Nukem-Forevers Duke Nukem Forever. A more thorough history can be found here.

The game is surely started completely from scratch after being dead for years, so for all intents and purposes it can be considered a 'new' game. Just a game that has years of bad press stacked against it right out the games. Will it most assuredly suck? Probably.

Still, its always interesting when something like this happens, mainly because it so rarely happens. I do hope there's a Keen game in the midst or perhaps another Rise of the Triad.

A game that out does Duke Nukem Takin' Forever? Lies!

The only game I'm looking forward to is Spore. It sounds like pure awesome.

Sweet Jesus on a pogo stick.

To roughly paraphrase Star Wars for a moment: "Now that's a name i haven't heard in a long time.... a long time."

Back in it's time, Prey looked and sounded awesome, boasting these new fangled portals things and coloured lighting that put Unreal to shame. Wow.

EDIT: Also, i doubt it out Duke Nukem Forever's Duke Nukem Forever. The reason behind this is that DNF cropped up every few years with a few new screenshots and obviously a new engine, they've just kept everyone hanging on, Prey just died, there were a few limited scraps of media, but eventually nothing was said about it and it was as if it never existed.

I've heard of Prey. Can't quite put my finger on what it was though... I do remember the name from years ago though...

esuna: While yes its true that DNF has been in development more, and had more media and hype associated with it (though Prey did have a lot as well), and never officially stopped development, DNF never had the entire development team quit at one time. Or be fired en masse. On multiple occassions.

Prey hasn't out DNFed DNF yet, but it will. All the pieces are there, you can't deny it.

I dunno if you meant for this or not, but that's actually what they are calling it. Area 51 mode. heh.

These guys really don't seem to be on top of the whole "get games finished" idea...

While we're at it, I always thought TF2 trumps DNF in terms of how long we've been waiting, considering that it was originally going to be on the Quake 2 engine as a direct sequel to TF on the Quake engine. Or so I have heard.

Indeed, TF2 was a big selling point for Quake 2 (it was suppoed to be a mod for it before it was bought by Valve) and then a big reason people bought HL1. When TF2 was announced as a commercial product, hundreds of people were **** off (many bought HL1 just to play TF2 and didn't care about single player, and at the time HL wasn't expected to become a multiplayer powerhouse, SiN was). Valve made TFC to appease these fans till TF2 came out and then later released the SDK so other mod developers could make their own mods.

But DNF has been in development far longer than TF2. DNF development, at least at the very basic "hey lets make a sequel" level, started after Duke3D shipped in 1994, before Quake ever came out.

So, is there any chance that DNF will actually come out, or is it just a running joke?

After all this, not releasing anything would be suicide, so I'm sure we'll see something. Hopefully all this time has been spent making the game perfect instead of posting on their forums all day like it seems they've been doing.
