And my god, just how many security holes can we have? I have 8 gigs dedicated to windows. I moved the tmp and temp drives onto a swap drive on it's own, and every program is kept off it. The documents and settings data is on another drive. Windows basically by itself with all these updates is nearly 4 gigs. Sigh. I just find SP2, good in theory, but causes tons of hassles and slowdowns (from working in tech). I still don't like it, even with the new patches out. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> Something is wrong then. People need reminding about vital system security routines. I shouldn't have to keep telling people who buy anti-virus to register it, and keep it up-to-date. I shouldn't need to tell people why they have trojans on their PC after they decided to let the whole world into their PC.
But I have to. For all their fallacies that end-users pick up, and maon like nothing about, Microsoft have done a damn fine job of telling people that they need to learn the security stuff. They are reminding people that they need an anti-virus that is up to date. They are reminding people that they need an active firewall. They are reminding people that keeping your PC up to date with Automatic Updates is vital. If everyone listened to them, then most RPC-based threats would have fizzled on our increased global security at the home user level. The new Spyware threats don't affect SP1 or earlier versions of XP. Updating to SP2 did mess up some programs on my system, but no more than the update to SP1.
People appear to very competent at forgetting all that needs to be done, despite being told to do it. And then they decide to have a go, because they are being constantly reminded to keep on top of their PC security. Even though my mum's PC is only on PSTN Dial-up, it still has AVG-Pro, and ZoneAlarm installed. ZA gives next to no alerts, but it is still there. Prevention, as they say, is better than a cure.
