My Pc Is Spamming Email

Ok, in the past couple of days, whenever I get my PC online, AVG email scanner starts going nuts, showing hundreds of emails a minute being sent out, and every single one is returned to me as it can't reach its destination.

So, of course I think virus or spyware. Do a full sweep of both with fully updated stuff in safe mode. Clean out a few spyware (I checked all the stuff, nothing too suspicious) and AVG came up clean. I checked out msconfig, and removed everything that I didn't need, besides AVG and such, and it kept doing it.

So, I finally just did ctrl+alt+del and shutdown AVG email scanner as it was sending out the hundreds of emails. It crashes... and the emails stop sending. Im not sure if this is because AVG understands the email scanner is dead (it whines about it) and won't let ANY email out, or the email scanner is somehow linked to it. Any other ideas? I am stumped.

    Ok, maybe Im wrong here, it looks like AVG was stopping the emails and sending them back to me, Im probably firing them off right now...

    From all the emails sent back to me:

    Which is then followed by a multitude of reasons, depending on the email:

    "Cannot open smtp connection to '198.22.1.102'
    Connect: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (10061)"

    "mlara@nvi.net: No such user (mlara) -ERR mlara@nvi.net not found"

    "Cannot open smtp connection to '192.168.0.100'
    Connect: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (10060)"

    And so forth, argh!

    Long version: My firewall was down and out, so I was being used as basically a as a re-director for spam email. Hence I couldnt tell where it was comeing from on my PC. Got a firewall back up, and wow, Im being hit by about 50 IP's still trying to get in. Woops.

    If you were being used as a redirector then you probably have some sort of virus that gives the spammer control over your computer. It's probably best to get HijackThis and post the log so someone with experience in these matters can make sure that you don't have anything bad running.

    Yup. There was an article not too long ago from the Honeynet project, reporting something along the lines of that a clean install of Windows 2000 with an internet connection took 20 mins <i>at most</i> to become comprimised and added to a bot network. Firewalls are absolutely indispensible!
