<div class="IPBDescription">dunno why. plz help</div> Ok so i played a funwar yesterday. with my clan. And our opponents told me afterwards that my rate settings sucked. One of my fellow clanmates told me the same thing.
He said my rate was at 5000
now...here is the thing:
first for the record "i didnt change anything in my settings so they are the same as they have been in the war"
Now i had a look into my userconfig. showed me a rate of 25000. Which is actually <b>not</b> 5000.
So i thought...ok perhaps in another config...(which i didnt execute during the war so this search was kidn of useless) but even in these configs the rates where set to 25000.
Last try: I went to the same server i played last night and did the "rate" thingy into the console. And still it showed me a rate of 25000.
Soo....what happened? The guys who told me that i have a rate of 5000 said they didnt make a mistake. And i believe my teammember....so...what happened?

Oh...and my pings were fine!
I pasted rates in my config, userconfig, autoexec a trillion times. They won't give. The game remembers the rate I set in console ingame, and ignores all else. OUCH.
Second, rates get reset after a full install (as was 3.F) so perhaps thats it?
Also ping can be fine, but does not mean rates are. Complicated stuff
That way, if anything goes weird in a pub/scrim/match, just re-exec the config and all is good.
Wrong. this is a quote taken from a hl update(v4.1.1.1/3.1.1.1 )

sv_rate is just a server rate variable. Clients should not need to alter it. cl_rate exists though.
You can have "dodgy rates" without high pings if cl_updaterate is too low. Set it to anything above 30; 50 recommended.
Note that your ex_interp value should be set to 1/[your cl_updaterate] setting. (Well, the max rate setting of the server I believe.)
HTH

Now thats interesting... Any detailed information and/or link on this Frosty... Most of the netcode tweak tutorials dont mention this...

I'll look, but it was personal experiance that I noticed it, I would have rate at 15000, then have wierd hit reg, look at it and it was 1500, or 5000, but i'll see if I can find info for you gaz.

Remember what rate is, rate 1 means 1 byte/sec, so rate 99999 means 99999 bytes/sec, can your upstream support 100kb/s? (sorry if i'm wrong there, thats just how I've always interprated it) Thats why I use 13999 as my upstream is only 128kbits/s.
If you want it to be automatet, lend me your support.

As i wrote i went back to that same server the next day and executed the same conifgs. and my rates were at 25000.

Sure, but as I said before, max rate is 10000.

I'm gonna side with pinkeye.. just cause I remember an announcement on the cal front page a while ago saying they 'updated the .cfg to allow for rates up to 20000'. :o
Rate Max: 20000
cl_rate: Locked at 9999 to prevent exploits in NS.
Basic guide to help set your "rates", its not exact and works on your connection being stable.
rate = [download speed in bytes/s]
cl_rate = 0
cl_updaterate = rate / 360
cl_cmdrate = [upload speed in bytes/s] / 180
(8bits=1byte, 1024bytes=1kbyte)
By setting cl_rate to 0 it is meant to auto set it depending on your rate setting, given its locked in NS its pointless.
Steam settings:
56k: 3500
1Meg and above: 20000
For all connection types selected in steam it sets:
cl_updaterate: 20
cl_cmdrate: 30
Hope this helps tidy it up abit.
Here's something that was posted on these boards a long while back that I'm glad that I've saved.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->rate:
I’ve been assured that rate is capped at 20000. Using anything above 20000 has no benefit, and could potentially lower performance.
Recommendation:
rate 20000.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There is no real explanation of what rate is, but it's a great read concerning all of the other variables in question.
There's a thread somewhere in S&I suggesting different default variables. I'm going to go hop on over there right now. *EDIT* Yeah, the thread I was thinking about is Faskalia's thread. See his post above.
ah well, they made the freaking netcode, they know best:
<a href='http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=254&p_created=1096521254&p_sid=E3N_GsCh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzEmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1yYXRl&p_li=&p_topview=1' target='_blank'>http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/s...li=&p_topview=1</a>
I say either that or the Steam update caused it...or the VALVe survey.
Rate affects are client side only, so it's at your advantage to keep them high. Lowering your rate will make the game unbearably laggy, since rate is how fast you <b>take</b> information from the server.
Setting your rate too high for your connection (i.e. 2501 is a good setting for 56K) will just make the game lag for you since your client will try to download too much information at once.
cl_rate is a command which controls how fast you send info to the server; so naturally if you lower it then it will make you appear laggy to others since the server will not know exactly where your real position is. However, you will still see things normal if you keep your rate high. That is why cl_rate is locked to 9999. cl_rate is your upload, rate is download.
Hope that clears any questions up.
