    the tubes need to be replaced once in a blue moon, but you can usually tell long in advance before they are getting to that point. Pumps and radiators should last almost indefinately if you don't put anything in the water that degrades the internal parts.

    Also, is it not possible to make it so any "leaks" would simply drip onto the bottom of the case, rather than the motherboard etc?

    well seeing as water is being pumped through your system, it would spray from the leak in some random direction, usually hitting your motherboard or some other component.
