Server Crash

Once in a while my linux server crashes. I really haven't been able to pick out any specific event causing it, all I can get is the line
./hlds_run: line 83: 12996 Segmentation fault $HL $*
from the console. Haven't been able to get -debug to actually generate a file either, maybe i'm just missing some easy argument for it but whatever. Anybody have any ideas?

i got this one twice tonight, on a brand new server! -- athlon 1.6Ghz 512MB DDR on a phat pipe, brand new install of Redhat 7.3 as of today -- segmentation fault both times...

not sure if this is related, but we also had trouble getting our new hardware up and running this tonight after it did not startup so smoothly for the first time (error pasted below). we are using a symlink fix that i read somewhere around these forums to suppress the error: LoadLibrary failed on /opt/halflife/hlds_l/ns/dlls/ns_i386.so: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory -- the symlink fix involved linking another library to this requested one to fool it into starting. not sure if these two issues are related or not, though.

interesting thing is that our original server installation which was on some older hardware running natsel perfectly fine for several days, then when we transferred hlds server over to the new hardware tonight, it has already segfaulted twice in the middle of a long-playing match of ns_caged. just all of a sudden, a segafault and then auto-restart. below is a paste of console screen right as it happened:

    ./hlds_run: line 83: 1982 Segmentation fault $HL $*
Add "-debug" to the ./hlds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Fri Nov 8 01:30:22 PST 2002: Server Died
    Host_Init
    Added packfile /opt/halflife/hlds_l/valve/pak0.pak (985 files)
    Protocol version 46
    Exe version 3.1.1.0
    Exe build: 14:46:34 Jun 11 2002 (2056)
    WON Auth Server
    Server IP address ***.201.***.***:27016
    PackFile: /opt/halflife/hlds_l/valve/pak0.pak : sound/sentences.txt
    PackFile: /opt/halflife/hlds_l/valve/pak0.pak : models/shell.mdl

    PackFile: /opt/halflife/hlds_l/valve/pak0.pak : sprites/WXplo1.spr

    ...

    bunch of other startup stuff...

i'm going to be adding "-debug" to startup to see if this helps and then watch it closely, but this is frustrating to discover on our new dedicated game beauty and am hoping for some advice/suggestions...

    thanks!

I am also getting a crash once in a while. But I am running W32, with no log-entries explaining matters at all. In the log I only get this:

    L 11/08/2002 - 01:48:07: "*Dead*Oak*Tree*<1785><3218277><1785>" say_team "jetz"
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:48:14: "sPeeDy . : [bOy] : .<

    and thats it.

Running metamod 1.13, and clanmod 1.80.19 (Crashes also happened before I installed these two)

If anyone can ever reproduce any server crashes, PLEASE let me know how and I'll fix them ASAP. In the meantime, if anyone can ever get me a core dump of a crash, that would help tremendously as well (I think there's a way you can get it to generate a core by editing your hlds_run script). I'm not ignoring you guys here, it's just that I don't know where to start.

thanks for your reply. i have added the "-debug" param to my hlds_run, to see if when this happens again if it will generate the core dump you have requested....

looking at the logfiles, i see nothing out of the ordinary just before the server crashed, although it looks like when it crashes, it just cuts off in mid-logentry. i.e.,

    .....hundreds of other normal-looking lines......
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:11:47: "Kami<15><1024027><15>" say_team "welders?"
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:11:50: "matt<18><1017766><>" connected, address "24.120.211.62:27005"
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:12:06: "matt<18><1017766><18>" entered the game
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:12:17: "Kami<15><1024027><15>" say_team "15 armor, need weld!!"
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:12:21: "Rebelsperm<7><1194710><7>" killed "Ekon<2><2949648><2>" with "bilebomb"
    L 11/07/2002 - 22:1

that's it. the log file just ends there....

and the other crash, at 1:29am (which is way past when i should have been in bed, of course, but the addiction of the game can really keep one going, can't it?)...

    .....hundreds of other normal-looking lines.....
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:09: "JHunz<14><2573285><14>" killed "Tweak<31><2067080><31>" with "charge"
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:11: "JHunz<14><2573285><14>" killed "F|D^Mascot<44><1117879><44>" with "charge"
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:17: "FLarez<48><2239770><>" connected, address "24.24.227.187:43620"
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:26: "JHunz<14><2573285><14>" killed "Kraken<41><831419><41>" with "charge"
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:28: "FLarez<48><2239770><48>" entered the game
    L 11/08/2002 - 01:29:40: "Hix<32><1024430>

and that's it. notice the last line is not complete.

i wish i could provide more information but that's all i have for now. it seems like both crashes experienced were at a seemingly random moment, not coinciding with anything obvious or particular in the game, and the logfile and console were of no help either.

    server specs:
    Asus A7V333 AMD Athlon 1800
    Kingston memory 512MB DDR
plain Redhat 7.3 install, nothing special
(NOTE that our old server, which ran for days without any glitches, was running RH 7.2)

we are NOT running any addons yet, no metamod, adminmod, etc..., to eliminate that possibility.

thanks for your time, i will definitely post back here again if this happens again, and hopefully with the requested core dump.

Flayra, our NS server segfaulted again today at 4:42pm local time. there is no "debug.log" file anywhere to be found, but a core dump was created, which i would like to send you. since it is 235k (compressed) i won't be able to attach it to this message, but i am emailing it to your address as found in the "Team" section of your site...

hope this helps, and please let me know if there is anything else i can answer for you, or do for you, to help out with solving this. our server is at your testing disposal, if needed!

thanks again for looking into this...

im pretty sure i just crashed my server .. i was a onos and after getting redempted back to the hive i was stuck in some chambers couldnt get out so i tried to envolve into a another guy and the great old Warning Connection Problem poped up in the corner... i have a core but its 107mb and its from freebsd which isnt liking gdb that much from the linux emulation heh

    edit:

actually after installing gdb521 (freebsds default was 4.8) its another
    #0 0x2b36ee4a in AvHPlayer::PlayerTouch () from /usr/home/px/hlds_l/ns/dlls/ns_i386.so
    crash
i have core files from that same kinda crash on both linux (103mb core) and freebsd (107mb core)
