QuickTime = t3h *** IMHO.
I've heard that MKV is good for video compression, and in some cases, is better than XviD (although XviD is the premiere choice for compression right now).

I'd suggest sticking to either avi's or mov's rather than getting into wmv due to licensing issues with the wmv codec, manipulating post-compression isn't all that possible, and generally, you can achieve the same filesize and quality with a different codec. It's really not worth going out of your way for.
And for tools, codecs and guides when it comes to video compression, <a href='http://www.doom9.org/' target='_blank'>doom9.org</a> is a pretty decent place to look. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
