As far as pet cats getting killed, its pretty simple guys: you can't legally use a firearm in certain areas, so your cat is safe in your backyard. Aso, you shouldn't be letting your cats out to run amok in the neighborhood anyway, since they will kill every shred of wildlife they can find for their own amusement.
You have a pretty strange impression of cats there.
A) Cats were domesticated solely because they serve a purpose - that being the reduction of vermin. Our cats still catch the occasional mouse, and they do not leave the house. You'll now argue that not all cats serve this purpose. I'll ask you what use one can derive from a poodle. B) Cats will kill animals for sport if you don't give them some other sort of valve for their instincts. Similiarily, dogs will go berserk if you don't walk them out regularily. If you play with your cats every day, they will not be aggressive towards animals they do not wish to eat. C) You show me the cat that can be reasonably confined to a limited areal such as one's own garden and I'll show you the fish who prefers to breathe air.

I see this turning into another apples vs. oranges thread (apples ftw!), so I'll try to be curt. Yes, lots of cat owners are acting irresponsibly with their cats. There are 'lazy' breeds that don't need exercise, as I suspect there are dogs who need less movement than a German Shepherd, but many owners just don't care and buy the first pet that catches their attention, oblivious to the typical barncat's needs. Castrate the owners If you prefer a servile pet, enjoy your dog. One of my cats usally goes out for like 2 weeks.. then comes back..
i don't have problems with cat hunting if there are strict regulations to
1) check for the existance of a collar 2) set certain areas that hunting will not be allowed. ie. you can only hunt feral cats in the wilderness, such as a game park, not ones that stray into your back yard.
The problem is you can't keep a collar on a cat. Plus surely the problem is the overpopulation in peoples backyards, if the cats stayed politely in game parks and hunted deer or something then people wouldn't care.
I agree with Nem, neutering them would be far more effective in the long run.

seriously... There are lots of cats in the area. I've had to put a few down because of the cold outside, the family couldn't feed all of them. Most of the time the cats just disapear... most likely frozen to the ground out there. Believe me... i was in charge of mowing the lawn... nothing ruins your day more then watching rotted cat corpses fly out of the bottom of the lawnmower in shreds.
The cats we did keep were the most vicious sons o' b*@#%es i've ever seen though. During the summer they hunted their own food and we just gave them water. Ever see a cat take down a duck? its hilarious.

Anyway...
Hunting cats is pretty bad.
I could never shoot a kitty...
In my 21 years of existence, I have never taken care of one.
There's absolutey no sport in hunting a domesticated animal... Its like shooting fish in a barrel...
Not to mention the obvious problem of someone shooting someone's cat, then simply throwing away the collar...
This would "train" the owners of the cats that letting their VERMIN - er, pets - roam free throughout the neighborhood is not a good thing.
