looking for some pointers.....
This might be a bit off-topic but thought I'd try and ask. Friend of mine requested me to help do some illustrations for her to choose as her first tattoo. Now my illustration skills are acceptable which is the reason why she asked me.
I was wondering if anyone here have any other pointers in doing artwork that will be used in body art?
Note: Just to clarify I am not the one who is doing the actual tattooing. I am just providing the design for it.

if she doesnt take the first one she sees shes not in love with you
Then tell her to wait a few years to make sure she's comfortable with her decision.
Use Japanese Ink
It's semi-perm on skin (takes some scurbbing to get off, but will NOT wash off normally for a few months)
This way, if she decides she doesn't like it, in a few days of scrubbing, it'll be gone
I did that with my g/f's name on my right arm in Kanjii... worked kinda well till it got hit by pain thinner
Out of interest what kind of design was she looking at and where for?
Edit: also talk to people with tattoos to find out where the best place to get one done is. It's worth paying twice the price to get it done properly, it is permenant after all!

Well that is her main problem. She is still undecided yet on what exactly on a design she wants. I still need to find a time with her to sit down and do some word associations with her so that I can get a clearer idea of what she would really like.
So far the key criteria is that she wants a design that is fresh, sophisticated but most importantly unique. The uniqueness is the main one in the sense that she doesnt like your typical butterfly etc etc. That why she wants it custom drawn. So far I am doing a few abstract designs (cos that wat I specialze in).
Area wise its suppose to be for either one side of her shoulder blade area or her lower back.

I didnt know japanese Ink was that permanent. Although I might be getting it confused with chinese calligraphy ink. Would indian ink be the equivalent.
Reason is that I have talked to her about putting a chosen design temporarily on her to see if she really like the design on her. After all its like a permanent fashion accessory.
Edit: Oh and about finding a place to do the actual tattoo that should be no biggie. She knows a few frens around that can recommend her. And we are in London, so there should be a good tattoo artist.

There's a lot of different styles of tattoos, you'll have to ask her which she prefers. The ones most popular are tribal (usually monochromatic symbols), old school (think the sort of "<3 mum", or ships anchor tattoos) and new school. It's really a matter of taste, they're all applied similarly (it'd be good to note that it takes a lot longer to do a full colour tattoo as opposed to a tribal design, and thus cost more).
Designing tattoos are a quite similar to designing logos, you have to create something simple and striking :O.
