...So basically we're where we were 10 years ago (except without the useless hovering saucer...). I read about Moller's SkyCar about 7 years ago <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

NASA's thing is silly imo. One advantage of a flying car is bypassing traffic issues because you can go from A to B "as the crow flies". You start funneling people into 'skyways' and... you'll run into traffic again.

<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Without traffic restrictions you will have nothing but chaos. Even airliners have specific paths they are to stick to.

The advantage of flying cars, in this case, is paralellism. Traffic flows faster when there are three lanes than when there's only one, but expanding roads is expensive and not always possible if you have buildings in the way. If you add "roads" upwards rather than outwards, you <i>double</i> the capacity of the roads (and that's just adding one extra layer).

Skyways also aren't as restricted by terrain as roads. Maybe traffic could be improved by running normal roads between areas but there's already too much built up area in the way. With flying cars you can go right over the top of them.

    [edit]Oh, and 4000th post. Yay me.[/edit]

We've seen the problems the Jetsons had with skytraffic...

This is cool and everything, but what's the point in a flying car? Last time I checked, those on the ground were already quite fast, efficient, and safe.

I can see this having a future in niché sectors, but I doubt we'll ever see the advent of personal flight as a mainstream concept.

Except when you can 4 times as fast and not have to worry about being a plane with other snoring, whining people for long distances. And driving home for work won't invovle you sitting there for 3 hours at red lights. And computer controlled means smoother and faster transportation and no one cutting you off and acting like ****.

And comeon, if you landed at a first date in this, you would win. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

all we need now are star trek teleporters, so we can set one up at the office, and when the boss isn't looking, you can beam yourself home to watch tv, and when the boss comes close, you beam yourself back and look busy

If memory serves me correctly teleporters are already a reality.

Was watching a program a few years ago on BBC2 late at night and they was saying how they had managed to transport an atom from point A to point B. The problem being the human body is made up of millions of atoms in a specific make up for each person. Getting to the point where a human can be transported will take years if never, unlikely we will see such an invention in our life span. Also thiers the basic fact that any transporter must destroy the original copy in order to function correctly. Would you want to get in a machine that in reality is going to kill you then make a copy of you else where. I for one wouldnt wish to risk it... id rather walk.

Ive never understood peoples facination with getting from point A to point B in the fastest time, walk or bike enjoy the view and atmosphere around you time is no matter if my life has tought me anything its that time will continue regardless of what we do, you might aswell enjoy every moment while you can.

Driving down the motorway to visit my parents is a real pain. Three hours in transit (best case scenario) isn't something to be enjoyed, especially when it's my sister driving.

..it was a photon.. not a atom... and its just hyped as teleportation.... the process was more a "cloning with destruction of the original" process.. simply spoken... very complicated quantum physics stuff
