Do you get sound in everything else? Confirm this by playing a media file in your favourite media playing software. If you do get sounds, then the problem will be localised to Steam. If not, then the problem will be global.
Problem localised to Steam.
1. Try another Steam game, like Half-Life, and see if you get no sounds in that. If you do get sounds, then the problem is localised to NS. If you still don't get sounds, then check all volume controls within Steam Games, then try again.
Problem Localised to Natural Selection.
1.Click on Options, then on Audio, and make sure that the main volume isn't turned right down. If it is, then turn it up, and try again.
Problem NOT localised to Steam.
1. Check all speaker, and headphones connections. Try your speakers with a standalone device, like a CD Player, or an MP3 Player.
2. Check the Windows Volume Controls. These can be found by Right clicking on the speaker in the system tray (Bottom right of the screen by default), then left-clicking on Properties. Check that the volume is not too low.
3. While you're in the Volume Controls, make sure that the Volume slider does not have a tick in the box below it. Take the tick out if there is one, the box is for Mute.
4. Check that your sound drivers are installed correctly. This can be found by going to Start, then Run. Type "sysdm.cpl" in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. This will bring up the System Properties. Under Windows 98/Me, click on the Hardware Tab, which will display the Device Manager. Make sure there are no exclamation marks next to any device. Under Windows XP, click on "Hardware", then on "Device Manager". Same thing applies to XP, make sure there are no yellow marks next to any devices.
