ive been playing as lerk a lot lately, and while i seem to be using him effectively, i have no real understanding of how umbra and spores work. ill narrow my question down a bit...

1) where do you need to position umbra to get its effect? in the cloud, behind the cloud?

2) what exactly does umbra do? i heard it reduces the chance of bullets to hit by 10%, but this seemed
questional to me.

3) what are some general techniques to use with umbra?

4) does an ememy need to stay in the spore cloud for it to keep dealing damage?

thats all, thanks in advance

edit: i made some typos but im too lazy to fix them sorry

I rarely play Lerk so I can't speak from experience, but I've read that it reduces the chance of bullets hitting TO 10%, not BY 10%. Think about it - if you're using it to help keep a Fade alive while he's throwing acid rockets at a single turret, 10% of the turret bullets is still a hit every few seconds. The cloud only lasts a few seconds, and it's the 3rd (?) ability so it obviously has to be somewhat useful.

I'm not sure about the other questions. The above answer was basically the first thing that came to mind while reading that question, so I figured it's worth a post. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me on it.

    1) Inside it works really well But I haven't tried setting up behind it, usually b/c im in a tight space and always in it.

    2) Umbra reduces the amount of bulets hit. I believe the number is that it stops 7/8 bullets going thru the cloud, thats just from memory and what I read from PT's.

    3) Umbra is awesome backup, if you're attacking a marine base with a fade or onos, do umbra around a corner, pop out, send spikes down the hall along with your fade using acid rockets or bile bomb. Then just sit back, recharge(hopefully with adrenaline), and do it again, great way to take out turrents.

    4) Spore clouds are awesome when used right. It has a pretty big radius, but once a marine gets out, it stops working

Just a couple of things that came to mind... hope it helps

Spore is great for final attacks on the marine base, especially with most of the turrets gone. Just spray it multiple times over the portals and it'll be hard for the marines to fight back. Also, multiple spore clouds has cummulative effect.

You have to be inside the Umbra cloud for it to be effective. I've tried to use it while running. What? Do the bullets slow down, then speed back up again?

Umbra should last for 10 seconds, but it will show "In Umbra" on the lower area of the screen. Sometimes you will cast Umbra and the smoke won't appear, but the effect is still there. I use it to take out turrets all the time. Get real close to the turret before it starts hitting you, then spray Umbra. Strafe left and right while biting the turret. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's also effective for defending your base. When I am stalking around corridors, I'll have Umbra ready. As soon as I come under fire, I spray umbra and shoot the attacker with spikes. You get the general idea.

Spores are best for scattering units and blocking hallways. As mentioned earlier, it makes quick work of spawning marines at their base. And if you are getting chased, you can use it to block off a hallway temporarily. If the marines are holding a position, this is a great way to scatter them so your Skulks and pounce. Both are very useful and make the Lerk a great support addition to any force.

Good response from Fina. As a final note: Umbra stops 6/7 bullets. It does not work against grenades, siege turret splash damage, welders, or knives. It protects any alien within it (not just the caster), and two umbras are NOT twice as effective as one - the ability does not stack.

A few other tips on spore cloud:

    * Sporecloud absolutely tears up marines in vents because they have to crouch, and as such have very limited mobility. HA marines also take quite a bit more damage because of their slowness. So it's a good weapon to use if that last marine is hiding in a vent somewhere.

    * Sporecloud is ideal when the marines have to stay in place for a few seconds -- eg if they're welding a door, building a structure, or using an armory.

    * The area of effect makes sporecloud very effective against groups of marines -- great way to stop those "go-for-broke" marine assaults on a hive.

I find the lerk is better at taking out turrets for above so I normally save umbra for defending hives or team mates.

[Edit] Dont forget that now you can concentrate on the TFac (turret factory) instead of taking out every turret seperately. Its best to fly up above them (they cant shoot up, its a 60 degree field of fire like < that. If you fly above them you can swoop down to the TFacs unprotected side easily and then just bite away. Saves alot of time, health, energy etc

When you are in the effective range of the umbra, it says in the bottom right corner " In Umbra " or something like that. I saw it last night when I went on a 10 hour NS binge. You have to be standing in it, for it to have any effect.

Oh yea turrets are **obscenity**, oh how I hate them !
