It probably means Software mode not supported by Natural selection (wich in fact is true).
You have to play using OpenGl. Change it in your video settings.
To be more precise. Open NS. Go to options/video and open the scrolldown menu marked "Renderer". There are 3 settings. Software, D3D and OpenGl. NS will only run with OpenGl.

That's incorrect. NS will run in Direct3D, but OpenGL works better.
