Which Eating Regime Is Better?

ScytheScythe Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 46NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation, Reinforced - Silver
<div class="IPBDescription">3² meals a day, or eating when hungry?</div> My gf and I got into a discussion tonight about which eating regime is better from a health perspective:

Traditional (Mine):

Eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at roughly the same time each day with the occasional snack.

Weirdo (Her's):

Eating whenever you're hungry, in an amount proportional to how hungry you are.

My point of view is that mine is more valid because your body doesn't signal hunger until you're low on blood sugar, by then it's too late to prevent lethargy. Topping yourself up at regular intervals is better than waiting for the pangs to start.

She doesn't see why you should eat if you aren't hungry. I am having trouble finding an argument to show why my method is better that she'll listen to without getting grumpy.

I want a discussion about which you think is more valid, and any arguments you might use to put forth your view.

It's my belief that several small (healthy) meals are better for you than the more popular 3 larges ones of brekkie, lunch, and dinner.

I eat when I feel like it and have never had any dietary problems. However I know a lot of girls who say they eat when they are hungry to cover up for the fact that its a good excuse not to eat, does she (and this will be a stupid question) worry much about her weight?

I sorta combine the two... I allow myself 2/3 meals of whatever during a day but outside of those times I only drink water and eat fruit... I try not to eat anything after 8pm <s>incase I turn into a gremlin</s> because the body doesn't burn it off as well late in the day and it seems to work fine :3

What she does eat is, on average, healthy stuff. She does worry about her weight which seems to be a universally common ail.

Aye, the idea is that 5-6 "portions" a day is best. Apparently you never feel hungry, and you yet take in less calories.

Except people like me. I have never managed to reach 70 kilos, so I guess I'm safe...

I heard that it's better to eat often and little than to eat seldom and much. I can't say I abide by that rule, though.

Most people snack throughout the day as it is. Of course, convenient snacks are rarely healthy, as compared to the average meal. But these days, who has the time to eat dinner?
  • SkySky Join Date: 2004-04-23 Member: 28131Members
I snack all the time, but I also do force myself to eat a big breakfast and at least a medium-sized meal at dinner time.

Of course, my metabolism is insanely fast. I work out, I play ice hockey, yet I can't seem to break 160 pounds (~73 kilos). And I've been trying >_>

I eat when I am hungry, unless work dictates otherwise in which case I wait till either after or before work to eat again.

Sometimes that can be five to six full sized meals a day to a little as two.

I have some extreme circumstances that may have caused this issue, so I might be an exception. (Aka insanely fast metabolism like Sky)

Grazing throughout the day seems to work for me, but college has messed that up.
Some days it would be one huge meal, some days I would just cook a little something every few hours when I felt like it. I haven't noticed much difference in weight gain from either method, atm I'm 6'1" and 120 lbs. but the freshman 5 I gained has been muscle so far. I think that higher metabolism folks like the grazing method more, as it keeps a steady flow of energy coming in.

Here's a page saying that eating several small meals is better than eating a few large meals:
    <a href='http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T273701.html' target='_blank'>http://www.diagnose-me.com/treat/T273701.html</a>

I've always heard that eating several small meals is healthier than eating a few large meals, but I've also heard that it's worse for your teeth.

The thing is, the "eat when you're hungry, and in proportion to how hungry you are" implies that you have a range of hunger, from small hunger, to large hunger. But hunger doesn't sneak up on you all at once. It comes slowly, and the only way to get excessively hungry is to put it off until later, or not have time to eat.

If you have a large range of hunger then you aren't really paying attention when your body says "feed me." Or you're over-compensating when you do eat.

So it has to be best to eat regularly, 3-4 times a day, whatever fits your schedule, and then stick to it. Otherwise your body gets confused and your blood suger gets seriously messed up with the rollercoaster ride of eating whenever. And then it doesn't know the best times when to tell you to eat or not.

I've done both, and I feel all-around better when I eat regularly. At one point I only ate 1 meal a day, about 1500 calories in one sitting. It was insane. I didn't feel good at all.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
But the thing is, is it better to eat three regular meals, or five smaller regular meals? I'm assuming that in the end, your food intake remains the same, just divided between more meals.
  • DaJMastaDaJMasta Join Date: 2005-01-10 Member: 34750Members, Constellation
the difference is small enough that it matter more what you eat than when you eat it.

With my schedule i usually go for the 3 meal thing, but sometimes come closer to 4, and if you want a healthy snack.... eat a whole bell pepper (de-seeded of course) they're sweet, vegitables, multicolored, and delish.

1500 calories in one sitting isn't a very big meal. At least.. not from my experience. I feel for you when you were doing that.

I don't know how you can say that when the average daily caloric intake is about 2000 Calories. You've got to be extermely overweight or you have to be exercising for several hours a day.

The consensus seems to be that by eating several small meals you can cut more calories becasue you don't experience those hunger pangs which make you eat more than you really need, however as someone so keenly stated, (unless you can brush your teeth after every meal) it would be worse on your teeth becasue you're probbaly introducing nutrients to the bacteria in your mouth earlier than the average 3 meal a day plan.

Seems like I'm the only one here without a fast metabolism. As a freshman in high school, I was 5' 10'' and 230 pounds, I had a gut as a result of my eating habits and excessive time spent playing Counter Strike and the like. Now, two years later I'm 6' and 230 pounds, but no gut. I forced myself onto a strict eating and exercise regime of 3 meals a day, no snacking, a regular water intake, and a two hour cardiovascular and weight lifting exercise after school. I think I've gone from something like 40% bodyfat to 10%, but then again, that's just a guess.

I eat constantly and avoid anything fried. I'm pretty fit. I dont think that three meals a day is all that wise, but if you are having healthy, wholesome food, tank up on it so that you'll have the power to avoid sweets later on.

I eat constantly, mostly bread products (pretzels, noodle soup, etc...). I have small meals and basically snack more or less constantly between them. And while I'm not as insanely underweight as Roberto (6'1" and 120 lbs? That's just unhealthy man...), I'm definately on the lower end of the weight scale.

So I follow the "eat when you're hungry" plan, except I'm always hungry. =) I tend to agree with CMEasts suggestion that your (Scythe's) gf is just using it as an excuse, as the "eat when you're hungry" plan usually results in eating MORE than the 3 squares a day plan, not less.
