Playing Old Demos

I tried to play a demo that I had recorded a time ago, in an older version of steam/ns but I got some error and half-life stopped responding.
Now I wonder can you play demos that have been recorded in an old version of ns in a newer version of ns? And if it's recorded in an older version of half-life will it work then?
I'm not sure if half-life has been updated since but I'm pretty sure there has been some ns version after I recorded it...
And what program do you use to convert demos into avi (or movie files)? And how will that work with the problem (if there is a problem) above??

Demos recorded under a different Client DLL may not work correctly because of changes to the underlying game structure. So 1.0x demos won't (may not) work with 2.0x or 3.0x clients.
If you have a different version of the map then the demo won't play (and since almost every map has been updated at least once since its original release, this will almost defintely be an issue).
Demos recorded under different versions of the HL Engine reportedly don't work correctly. Which means Won.net and Steam demos are incompatible.
However if you record a demo on a 3.0.3 server you CAN watch it fine without the 3.0.3 server dll (you just need the 3.0 Files, which have just the 3.0Final server dll).
you have to have the version you were ussing when you recorded the demo.
one soloution is to convert your demos to movies when ever you record one (how to do it, I don't remember atm, there is a program)
Virtualdub, Videomach or bmp2avi.
