not completely sure, since most of my friends are either cheap (wont pay 10 bucks for HL -_-) or lazy (ill install it sometime....)
But its fun to play with friends, Ive played a couple multi-hour 2v2 classic games with 2 people I knew and some random guy who just showed up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
about 5-6 others I convinced online to try out the game.
The person i convinced to play IRL is a RTS fanatic, and i totally expected him to brush the game off since he hated FPS. But man now he loves the game more then i do and is a incredible asset to any commanders/alien team he serves. Anyways, this was back in the 1.04 days, and I suspect that the distraction was a major part of his poor preformance and subsequent dropping out. Since 2.01 I've been playing less and less and I've finally gotten to the point where I'll only play on one server. Or seige maps. I love seige maps now, probably because they have that sort of epic feel I miss from the 1.04 days. Unfortunatly my favorite server doesn't play seige every other map like it used to.
I converted one CS player, a friend (he's buying HL just because of it now), my roomie is hooked, 3 of my private lesson students now play it, another friend loves it, 7 former high school bandmates, and 3 friends that play it causually.
Total = 17.
And I'm gonna spread it even more with some upcoming LANs.
So, would those who've managed to get other people to play NS care to share how they convinced 'em? Did you start with Combat first? Did you go commander?
I'm thinking of holding a LAN in a few months and maybe trying to get people to play NS. It wouldn't be so bad for the marines if I went commander, but the aliens are going to pwn themelves.
I've probably told several hundred, seriously. And considering that when I make I sales pitch I usually get a hit, then plenty of people now play NS or have at least checked it out because of me. Lots of free advertising.

Actually word of mouth seems to be NS's primary method of advertising, that's how I found out about it.
