Widescreen Gaming

I am running 1920x1200 on a Dell Inspiron 9300. Widescreen mode in the options menu just stretches the horizontal resolution. Is there any better option where I see more space in the game? Can I change my FOV? What should I change my FOV to if I want all the graphics to be unstretched?

Thank you in advance.

    well standard gaming is done in the basic 1024x786 environment, a 4:3 ratio, your screen that resolution is an 8x5 ratio, a slight difference in size, but a notaceable difference. Through simple math, you can determine the correct FOV.

    Default is 90 degrees, at a 4/3 ratio
    and you have a 8/5 ratio, so 90/(4/3) = x/(8/5)

    x = 108

    so your optimum FOV should be set to 108, to set this in the console use the command fov 108.

    Keep in mind that people, especially ones easily affected by motion sickness or seisures, should consider not changing the FOV, though im not completely sure if it would make a difference. Also remember that while 108 will give u unstretched graphics, you will get more than a normal view, so your prepreherial vision may be not what your used to.

    I would say NEVER go above 120 or below 70, whatever works for you works for you i guess....

    I cant change the fov in ns through console or any other means (config.cfg).
    i get ' fov is set to "0" '
    This is annoying...
    The better term is 16:10 widescreen (even though its equivalent to 8:5 the levels are usually 4:3 (4:3)^2=16:9, or 16:10)

    Thanks for the reply though. For now its just windowed.

    Changing your fov would be kind of an unfair advantage (imagine someone that could get used to a 360 degree fov, it would be impossible to ambush them). That's why you can't change it.

    yes, i have learned afterwards that the fov command requires SV_cheats to be enabled....

    So, theroretically, if you have a screen stretched around you, and your fov set to 360, you would be able to look over your shoulder?....

    foward, backward, side to side, just not up and down <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    but it would be like looking into a ring of mirriors, 360 degrees of visuals would confuse the crap outta me.... lol

    Maybe better off getting like 4 monitors, and setting up complete 180 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    thats awesome, y not just go buy a plane lol.\

    It would be a pain even to get all the monitors calibrated for color, not only like 15 minutes and 2 breakers to power the whole monster up...
