Its free because their going to release frequent expansions that they're praying people will pay for. And no, its not hosted on anyone's computer: No matter what, its hosted on their server, to prevent any chances at all at hacking.
also instancing is slightly less stressful on servers meaning they won't need quite as much horsepower as an MMO would. Having more and more people in the same place is exponentially more stressful (hence the reason WoW crashes from massive raids).
what really killed diablo2 for me was all the botting... it ruined the economy and just left the game to be autoplayed (yes i botted, and ran scripts myself, just to stay in competition). being that GW is free, evenutally it will probably sucumb to bots and hacks like d2 did. and it will be a pretty worthless game at that point. do they dev teams have any plans to counter hacks and bots? if they are commited to keeping the game free of such crap, then maybe i'll consider playing.

From what I've seen of it, it looks more like a UT type game (deathmatch, objective based teamplay, etc) with RPG character development and combat systems. You can create a character that starts out at lvl20, skipping the development process.
Also, I'm wondering if you can have two people playing on the same CD key. It would be nice if my brother and I could play together, without having to buy another copy.

Each class has up to 4 paths(usually 3) to divide their character! Each path allows someone to be strong, and still carry over 40 truly useful skills!
Most of which have been balanced- its now a matter of seeing which is "above" the others.

just to clarify there are 6 classes monk warrior elementalist ranger necromancer and mesmer. Each class has 75 unique skills (there is no heal1 heal2...) plus some signet rings. Your char has two classes and you can get all of the skills in each of your classes so that's 150 for a char. There are attributes tied to each skill as quan was saying and if I remember correctly you can max out 2 and near max out a third (This is from when I was playing the beta and this stayed pretty much constant) Your class is either a primary a secondary and each class has an attribute you only get if that class is your primary.
As far as comparing it to other games, it seems that the high level play is more like a real time team based card game since you only have 8 skills at any given time. TBH I didn't find it very much like diablo at all; that always seemed like a gross oversimplification to me. That said I was never as obssessed with it after the first few times I played it, but my guild went inactive quickly and I never got the chance to play the high level missions after the first beta weekend because I didn't have a lot of time to devote to it. These high level mobs sound like they would be fun challenge of skill, especially with my mesmer.
well the diablo comparison is rather obviously a simplification, but it has a lot shared with it's older cousin; after all the similarities and the fact it has most of the DII design team at the helm is certainly no coincidence <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's not just a simplification, it's a poor one. You could compare any RPG to diablo since they all work in basically the same way. If people play Guild wars expecting to be playing diablo they will be disappointed or pleasantly surprised. Obviously you were disappointed.

I didn't expect it to be anything like diablo: I'd imagine it's relatively well known I'm no big fan of ye olde D games, if anything I'm almost the opposite :p
You could compare any game to Diablo sure, but when I stepped foot in GW's world during the E3 event armed with only the knowledge that some of the staff had been ex-square employees and whatnot it didn't take long for the "hey... this is like diablo" feeling to sink in. It wasn't expected, it wasn't put there by anyone else saying it was like diablo (because I hadn't seen anyone say that before arriving to that conclusion on my own) yet there are many forums and topics where it's simularity to diablo is often pointed out.
I don't believe majorities are always right however, when a mass of people all come to the same conclusion from their experience of something what are the chances there might be something to it? :p
Perhaps since the E3 open day and the beta that followed much later it's changed enough so that it's not quite as evident but in those first days it reeked of diablo so strongly few really disagreed that it reminded them of the wanderer's games.
locallyunsceneFeeder of TrollsJoin Date: 2002-12-25Member: 11528Members, Constellation
I have not had the experience of a lot of people claiming it to be like diablo. In fact I find it very curious since there only seem to be two things that it and diablo share that are mostly unique to these games. These being employees, which hardly matter when the game is actually different, and instanced worlds which is rare but other games like PSO do also have. The skill system is completely different, the economy is completely different, the story is completely different, as far as these things differ between RPGs anyway. Diablo is strictly and RPG and GW is more like a RPG deathmatch. The only things that gives it the diablo "feel" are third person camera which can become first person and is the same in most MMOs today and the double clicking on an enemy triggers default attack which most other MMOs also have.
I just don't see the comparison as being specific to this game in anyway and also missing the meat of the game, which is team play rather than soloing the same monsters in the same places over and over again.
well... you didn't see many, I saw tons. I'm not about to say you're not telling the truth and I know I'm not; different people, different social groups I guess. All I know is that the majority of people I talked to saw the Diablo 'feel' and this was all long before I found out there'd been diablo people working on it.
The skill system isn't like diablo sure, but it's not the skill system that make it diablique to me; I never play 1st person in these games yet for the controls of the E3 open test (which most of my actual play experience is based on, though I did try another beta after to see if it changed much and I watched a friend play another beta about 2-3 weeks ago or so) I couldn't really play with my fave camera that I use in most; behind. Something about the controls and the (at the time) rather clunky wasd drove me into using a high up camera. That wasn't what made it like the big D either :p The game felt like it was build primarily as point and click and as a result I found myself often resorting to that playstyle.
Bringing another game that's similar but doesn't feel 'diablo-ey' to me would be WoW. The controls are similar yet for some reason there's a certain 'feel' that makes WoW feel like WoW and GW feel like DII :3 I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's definitely there, or was at the time of playing.
I hasten to add I don't double click badguys in MMOs... any of them. Only in GW which isn't an MMO anyways, do I find myself using double click to attack :p
Also... considering what you describe as the 'meat' of the game for GW, diablo wasn't about soloing the same monsters all the time; I used to lan it and we'd work through the story as a team. It feels much then like GW does now. Perhaps that's why our views differ :3
I love a good bit of Teamwork buuut I didn't find myself enthused with GW's 'unique' blend of how it's done. I didn't hate it, I just found myself unimpressed, which didn't do my rapidly dropping sentiment towards the game as a whole any good.
Admittedly, in this arguement I stand at a dissadvantage because I've not played the recent retail version so our views are probably even further distanced by that. Unfortunately I don't particularly feel like forking over money to find out if a game I didn't like the first time around is now something I'd enjoy :p

Never had that experience, I suppose the story mode would feel similar I had played diablo like that. I agree with you that guildwars isn't at heart an MMORPG, it isn't diablo either, but the story modes could feel similar in that respect.

Perhaps since the E3 open day and the beta that followed much later it's changed enough so that it's not quite as evident but in those first days it reeked of diablo so strongly few really disagreed that it reminded them of the wanderer's games.
make of that what you will :o
I just don't see the comparison as being specific to this game in anyway and also missing the meat of the game, which is team play rather than soloing the same monsters in the same places over and over again.
That wasn't what made it like the big D either :p
The game felt like it was build primarily as point and click and as a result I found myself often resorting to that playstyle.
Bringing another game that's similar but doesn't feel 'diablo-ey' to me would be WoW. The controls are similar yet for some reason there's a certain 'feel' that makes WoW feel like WoW and GW feel like DII :3
I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's definitely there, or was at the time of playing.
