On what the trends are in PC games.
Hello everyone!
Well its that time again, time for Cpl.Davis to buy a new computer game. woo! *does happy dance.
I was at Walmart the other day and happened to go down past the video game section.
Once there I came to realise I had no idea what to get. I dont know what is good, what is claiming to be good but sux in reality, and what just sucks to begin with.
hmmm due to work and this strange game called "real life" (you know, that thing outside, with the really good physics engine, awsome visual effects, but also crappy save system, and crappy AI )
Well do to this thing I havnt had much time lately for keeping up on the hottest trends and such in PC entertainment. I just reinstalled Freelancer with the new total conversion TNG mod which adds in player usuable capital ships, lots of new systems, ships, weapons, etc from Starwars, babylon5, Homeworld, and others. So Ive been playing that.
meh
I havnt really gotten a new game in a while. last game I got was HL2 but I dont count that b/c its a no brainer must have lol and DOOM3 which was given to me as a gift.
Now my specs.
I run a pentium 4, 2.36 gighrz, 512 RAM, Geforce 3 TI200 64mb gfxcard. Cable Internet connection. So the game must be able to run fairly well on that.
Nothing great but its kinda old now especially in keeping up with new games. However it ran Hl2 just fine and once I extracted all files in DOOM 3 (so it took up over 4 gigs of my harddrive lol) it ran just fine on all medium settings, which was perfectly ok with me.
Im pretty open to all sorts of game genres. A long single player would be nice with a good storyline. Multiplayer and single player replayability are also high points.
Now since I dont make boatloads of money I problably wont be getting anything better for a while in terms of a new computer and when I buy games. So I usually play the crap out of my games more than once.
An open world (like Freelancer, Morrowind) are nice too. I like simulations but I dont have a good joystick so yea...
With the upcoming summer Im going to be working A LOT extra so multiplayer only games wont work too well.
For example some of my games I like.
Morrowind, Freelancer, UFO, Ground Control 2, C&C Generals, Medieval Total War, Any Deus Ex game, Unreal 2, Vietcong, the first Call of Duty (havnt played any others)
yea these are mostly stratedgy and first person shooters but as I said if its good Im open to other genres. I wouldnt mind waiting patently in a sub to attack a convoy, thats just as fun running and gunning to me.
So any ideas?

I recommend World of Warcraft. Though I'd be worried about it's resource consumption. I dunno about how it would do.
Excellent game and gamepad! Should run just fine.
Battlezone, heavygear, doom (lol), outpost 2, command and conquer just to name a few good series (except outpost 2, thats just the only game of that. Its pretty fun, none the less. Sierra game, too ) Battlezone and heavygear are a must play if you never touched them.
Hmm yea was looking into that one,
and parasite, I jsut tried to PM you about something but when I sent it it said
error, user does not exist
Did you get anything from me?

umm... no.
the ! in my name inconveniences me a lot. like when i got my constie i had to get flayra to personally put the steam_id in my profile cos the ! in my name didn't allow me to do it by myself. even nem0 couldn't do it.
and i can't recieve PMs either
so they disabled the use of ! in usernames after that
edit: yeah maybe you won't be able to run scct. the only way i can run it smoothly is by putting everything to low, turning everything that can be off and playing at resolution 640x480
and my rig is intel 2.8 ghz, geforce fx5200, 1.5gb ram
it was based on ww2 though. cant remember the name though.
hmm that gets me thinking.
It would be cool if they made a turn based or real time stratedgy game like X Com:UFO Defense only with NS characters.
wow that would be fun! you could put in new environments too like
Aliens invading some space colony for urban warfare.
It would take commanding to a whole new level lol.

hmm yea i remember that game, pretty good,
but thats not the one i was referring too. The one im trying to think of the name for was basically jsut like x-com but in a world war 2 setting.
I would link to the demo, but it's a piece of crap that will leave a bad taste in your mouth and make you think the entire game is bad, when it's really a million times better.

Ok, so it's not exactly "current" and I'm sure most of you were expecting me to say this, but I heartily reccomend that you play Marathon. You'll be treated to the best story you will ever see in a first person shooter and probably the best you will ever see in a game, along with some superb level design and great gameplay, so long as you can stand some 2d sprites and somewhat ackward view control (Think Duke3D) due to it being a 2.5d game and as far as I know the first FPS to use the mouselook system we take for granted today.
All three games in the trilogy are very long and very replayable and although I haven't actually got a chance to verify it for myself, the multiplayer was allegedly "all that" back in the day (it also has coop). Did I mention that they're all free? Because they are.
Edit: I forgot to add that Far Cry is surprisingly scalable, so you shouldn't have any framerate problems as long as you don't change anything from the default settings it chose for your computer (Far Cry is the only game with an autodetect system good enough to completely satisfy me without having to change a single setting) while still looking pretty good.
Evil Genius is fun, reminds me of Dungeon Keeper.
Sid Meier's Pirates! is a fantastic game. (the remake) It is all kinds of addictive, I don't want to get into how many hours I've spent on it.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. If you were upset with Civ 3 or Civ:CtP, go play this. A worthy sequel to the civilization series.
the games that actually use up most of my time would be the following 3, however.
Natural Selection I think you know that one.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is huge amounts of fun, and completely free. I don't know what their devs were thinking but that game is stupid amounts of fun, especially with a price tag of nothing.
Final Fantasy XI-I actually don't recommend this one, though. I play that one because of my friends and some sick masochism affliction. Wait, that's why I play NS, too. So I guess Wolf:ET would be your best bet.
if you have 100 dollars handy, WoW is a lot of fun.
Pulse-The marathon trilogy is incredible. They offer a sort of co-op through the main levels and usually they had a secondary level set that required multiple switches being hit at different times. A lot of thinking for a game that involved guns, especially for that time period (you can't even jump!)
I played that game hard core then I got tired of it. Although now I cant seem to find my RTCW cd, do i need that game installed to play? I forget its been a while.

You don't need RTCW to play ET, it's completely standalone and free. It doesn't matter, though, because you should be playing Marathon.

There were a hell of a lot of jumping puzzles for a game that doesn't let you jump. Playing through Marathon coop is something that I've been longing to do for a quite a while and this is bolstered by the fact that, as of a few days ago it's not a complete pain in the **** to play it online, so if you ever feel like doing something like that, just tell me.
TA: Spring is a open source engine which happens to be using total annihlation as an example of... something, i don't know, either way it's TA (best RTS ever, ever, go buy it now if you dont have it already) for free! and in a FANCY new engine with terrain deformation and everything. so, go! download! enjoy classic gaming with a new.. uh... look.

You know that really wouldn't be that hard.
If only I knew how to mod UFO:Aftermath....
Damn!
However not only would I recommend UFO:Aftermath but Act Of War's very good. Its like Generals, but with more depth, better looked and cooler. Oh and the best expolsions in any game ever!
